According to my understanding, a true poet does not write poetry. He performs a role similar to that of a Prophet. Significantly, the Hebrew word for "Prophet" means a "Poet": "David and the captains of the host separated to the service of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals..." (Chron. 25:1).. As a "Muse Poet," I write Prophesies.

R.W. Emerson, a Transcendental poet and philosopher, wrote that "(P)oetry was all written before time was, and whenever we are so finely organized that we can penetrate into that region where the air is music, we hear those primal warblings and attempt to write them down" ("The Poet," 1842). Since all of poetry exists in its perfect form on some other plane of consciousness, it follows that no one actually writes it. Through "gray visions they obtain glimpses of eternity" (Poe, "Eleonora"), and, on returning from their visionary state, attempt to write down, as accurately as their memory allows, the words of the perfected poem that was revealed.

My belief, for various reasons, is that poetry (in its perfect state) necessarily comprises rhymed and metered form. It therefore follows that poets who work in rhymed-metered form, are recorded their visions more accurately than poets who reinterpret their visions as "free verse." Sandburg falls into this latter category, and, as such, is to be seen as lacking the requisite skills to capture and relate the revealed poem in its perfect form (assuming that he was capable of receiving such revelations).
