In my humble opinion, we should avoid having contests here. As the prevailing custom is --- you better tell us everything you know about the identification of the various poets in this remarkable picture and, if there is a gap in your data, you may ask others to fill in (if they can). Why put everyone on the spot?

Besides the identification of the poets, I would also like to see what your selection of these poets' ash'aar is. kaheeN aisa na ho k "SHE'RON KE INTIKHAAB NE RUSVAA KIYAA MUJHE"! :-)

Khalid SaaHib's opening post did n't come across to me as a "contest", but rather a collective effort to solve a puzzle. Having said this, Khalid SaaHib has given up too easily and unfortunately all this has been a rather anticlimax. There is one saving grace though. 19, 22, 24 and 38 are still mysteries. Over to you and the rest of ALUP community, my good Sir.

Thanks a lot for sharing this historic picture. How I wish I were born in such a bygone era and had a chance to hear some of these legendary poets live.

Honestly, if I had attempted this quiz under an honor code, without using any resources, I would have flunked it miserably. The only two front row poets I would have been able to identify on my own are Josh Maleehabadi and Hafeez Jullandhari. From the second row Tilok Chand Mahroom, and probably Faiz Ahmed Faiz. That's it, 3/38 or at best 4/38. If I had used the books in my personal library a few more, with internet help probably a lot more, but that wouldn't represent my true knowledge. Thanks for the reality check, quite humbling. :)

Will it be ok with you if I share a few of my personal favorite asha'ar from some of these poets in this thread? That'll be more in my domain.

You, for one, might have been disappointed at the resulting anticlimax but just see ---- if a laaaarge number of pictures had already been identified, then why put all ALUPers through an unnecessary exercise?

You may not agree with me on anything else but you'll definitely agree with me on the fact that, for the last 20-25 years that we have been frequenting this forum, this has been a place for SHARING knowledge with one another, not for TESTING others' knowledge.

Yes, this platform is for sharing knowledge but surely there have been "quiz-type" threads posted in the past. "An Interesting Project" is one such quiz begun by Ali Minai SaaHib. I quote from his "preamble".

"My second purpose is to have some literary fun, so I am posting a few ash'ar I already have on my list so that readers of ALUP can rack their memories for the poets' names. My hope is that this will ignite an interesting sequence."

He goes onto post 20 ash3aar and Jamil SaaHib gets the ball rolling by making an attempt at providing the name of the poet for a few of them and then asks the question, "When will you give us answers to the quiz?". The reply was...

"I will post the names of the poets in a few days once I think all who were going to try their hand have done so. Of course, it is also possible that I may be mistaken about a poet, so one purpose is also to get others' opinion. I will confirm any correct answers as they come in." and he "marks" Jamil SaaHib's answers as

I didn't put the answers there. I received the picture as is. Tariq Rasheed Siddiqui who is the son of Shujaat Ali Siddiqui (#33 in the picture) has the original picture. He testifies that the answers are correct. I will, however, speak with him regarding # 2. Honestly, I could not recognize even a single one from the picture. The picture seems quite worn out. I have requested him to make a copy from the original and send it to me. Let me see when or if he does that.

Looking at Pandit Labhbhu Ram Josh Malsiyaani's photos on the net, I would agree with you that no. 2 is Pandit Labhbhu Ram Josh Malsiyaani.

Employing the same simple method, no. 19 *is* Pandit Bal Mukand Arsh Malsiyaani. What are your thoughts on mystery figures 17,22,24 and 38?
