1. Hasn't reduced the distribution of illegal marijuana at all.
2. All of the companies in the business are losing money, millions to be exact.
3. Increase in use has increased incidence of mental problems in
all age groups.
4. Increase in car accidents by people who are high.

What a complete non-surprise!

There's a similar issue with vaping / electronic cigarettes being the
stupidly touted as the "solution" to smoking. All it did was
unsurprisingly increase the number of people doing it, especially
younger people.

The New Zealand Government held a public vote last year about whether
or not to legalise marijuana ... and the result was "No" ... just!

Do you support the proposed Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill?
No = 50.7%
Yes = 48.4%

So the in New Zealand law it remains illegal.

At the same time their also did a vote whether or not to make ethanasia
legal (when appropriate, with medical provisos), where the result was
an over-whelming "Yes".

Do you support the End of Life Choice Act 2019 coming into force?
Yes = 65.1%
No = 33.7%

Only 3million people returned their votes for each question, so there's
still about another 1million who didn't.

There was a whole advertising campaign here in New Zealand telling
people not to drive on drugs of any kind (including any prescription
drugs which make you drowsy, etc.). It is separate to the campaign
about not driving drunk.

"Drug driving is a serious road safety issue. ESR* research
shows that around one-quarter of all drivers and motorcyclists
killed in road crashes were found to have cannabis present in
their system, with or without other substances. Their research
also shows cannabis to be the second most common drug found in
blood samples of deceased drivers. The first is alcohol."

* ESR = Institute of Environmental Science and Research

One rather stupid advert used children who were apparently copying
their parent's habits ... more likely it simply encouraged younger drug
usage.

It might be informative to know how often cannabis (vs. alcohol) was the
*only* drug found...

I’d be more telling to know _when_ the person actually smoked weed,
seeing as unlike alcohol, it can be detected in the blood and urine for
over a week after use.

You can find that out from police reports. They'll have some kind of report on it when 1 year is up, except that SO many liberals in media use pot heavily.

No idea for individual types of drugs, but according to the New
Zealand's government's traffic department statistics for fatal crashes
....

Alcohol and/or drugs as contributing factors in fatal crashes
(2017 - 2019)

60% = Neither drugs nor alcohol
9% = Alcohol and drugs
13% = Alcohol only
18% = Drugs only

Likely about the same in Canada. Though there may be a few more "neither drugs nor alcohol" because we have a large Chinese population.

A huge irony in this is that for 60 years, government-run stores (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) where the only stores that could sell alcohol. Now, every s--- strip mall has a pot shop...

Similarly here, there's a ton of vaping shops opened up, and then the
fools who allowed it are wondering why it has become such a problem.

Yeah, with the medical marijuana becoming legal it seems I can't walk
around anywhere for long without smelling it coming from homes or
passing vehicles. It wasn't that way just a few years ago so it's
definitely seems that the change in the law that has made it more
prevalent.

Less govt. overreach is a "huge irony?" Your brain really is totally
fucked.

For what it's worth about 10 years ago I asked a sitting city
councillor who I knew to be a retired 27-year police officer "Doug, if
I had the power to magically create a tool that would be of benefit to
police forces across this country what would it be?" and he
immediately replied "a testing unit for cannabis that would be as
accurate and portable as a alcohol breathalyzer"

We also need a better idea of what cannabis intoxication means with
respect to the ability to operate a moving motor vehicle as we need to
know (a) at what level one becomes impaired to a degree the state
needs to be involved (for instance in most jurisdictions that's 0.08
though 0.05 is common in Scandanavia) and (b) how profound is the
intoxication effect and how long does that physical condition last?

These are questions we have clear answers for with alcohol and even in
2021 only a limited understanding with respect to cannabis and other
drugs.

[As an aside, some 30 years ago I had the misfortune of having a
waiter put a large jug of beer on the table directly on top of an
ashtray causing the jug to gush across the table and directly into my
lap. I drove home in terror that night as while I had been drinking
coffee 2 quarts of beer spilled in your lap makes a fairly impressive
odor and I prayed I wouldn't pass a police roadblock as I'd be in
trouble explaining myself!)

Well that's not quite true - in Ontario hard liquor was a provincial
monopoly when I lived there 30 years ago while beer was sold through
"Brewers Retail" which was a consortium of the big brewing companies
in Ontario. Not sure if that's still the case (I moved west in 1987)
but no question Ontario has one of the lowest market shares by
"micro-breweries" of any jurisdiction in North America and no question
a big part of the reason is Brewers Retail - which was entirely owned
and operated by the "Big 5" brewers made it exceptionally tough on new
brewers to get shelf space.

Uh-hunh. Tell me, what's the impact on the number of people going to
prison when they didn't do anything particularly wrong?
