Yes, they no doubt will have advert breaks, and probably stupid pop-up
advert "bugs". They do during every other similar event (royal
weddings, Olympics, etc.).

It's two channels playing the same event - people aren't going to be
watching both channels, so they're simply wasting their time. It would
be better off for one of them to play something else for those who
don't want to watch the Queen's funeral. They could even make some
cross-company deal to share the costs and profits for that couple of
hours and/or pop-up combined channel.

> If you have two Free-to-Air stations, I'm guessing one is Government
> funded and the other is Commercial funded.

New Zealand has quite a few Freeview channels available to everyone via
either aerial or satellite, and some have streaming / on deman internet
sites as well. The two main ones are "TVNZ One" (owned by the
government, but run as a business) and "Three" (currently owned by
Warner Bros.). Both have advert breaks and pop-up in-show advert "bugs"
(which on Three are extremely large and annoying).

The other main Freeview channel is "Prime" (owned by Sky TV, but is
free to everyone, Sky box not needed). It's possible this channel will
also have the event bumping regular shows.

There's a full list of the 33 current Freeview channels at:
<https://freeviewnz.tv/tvguide/channels/>
Most of them are garbage "special interest" channels and a couple are
radio station broadcasts that are available to "watch" (sound only) on
Freeview.

>> In this digital age, they could even have a specific "po-up" channel
>> that they use just for such things without needing to bump regular
>> shows.
>
> But how would people get to know that your 'Pop-Up' channel has popped up??

They would obviously advertise it just like anything else -
announcements during News show items about the event ("you'll be able
to watch it live on the pop-up TVFuneral, Freeview channel 87"), and
adverts in all the usual places (TV ad breaks, radio ads, newspaper
ads, etc.). They will already be advertising it, so simply have to swap
the channel name and number.

Sky TV quite often has limited time pop-up channels for things like
school holiday movies or the Olympics.

Tim, have you ever noticed T.V. stations can run 'Banner' Ads across the
bottom of the screen .... without interrupting the advertised program??

Hmm!! Sounds like you guys have a much better (free) deal than us!!

It seems we have 31 Free-to-Air T.V. channels which include such 'Must
Haves' as the Racing chn and several Home Shopping chns!!

Our Advertising free Government network, ABC, for example, has
Chn 21 ... general T.V. chn,
Chn 22 ... Kids Chn,
Chn 23 ... Teenage Chn and
Chn 24 ... 24/7 News.

And you can go on-line to get its iView channel to bing stuff!

Although they are all Commercial Free they do carry Promotional material
for Network shows

They're an utter pain in the backside and should be illegal! X-(
They're defacing someone else's hard work and is a form of grafitti.

One stupid network here in New Zealand has such massive pop-up
advertising during the shows, that you can't even see the show
properly, and they regularly obscure things like sports / quiz show
scores, quiz show questions / answers, people names or subtitles, etc.
