Doctor Who's Budget to Rise to £100 Million Per Series [Season],
Thanks to Disney+?
----------------------------------------------------------------
Broadcast is reporting that Doctor Who's budget will be tripled,
so that each series will have an estimated £100 million spent
across the season.

That's apparently thanks to Disney+, the platform that's secured
the streaming rights to Doctor Who across the world - except,
that is, in the UK, where it'll keep its traditional home on the
BBC.

A mysterious source told Broadcast:

"The BBC had to make the decision for the future success
of Doctor Who because any show of scale needs a partner.
Reliability is the most important factor irrespective of
how many episodes you make or who the Doctor is...

If you can bring in a single partner with one
distribution agreement, while retaining exclusivity in
the UK, that is the best of both worlds for the BBC."

Sure, you may sniff at this suggestion, seeing as it's not been
confirmed by the BBC just yet, but Broadcast is a reliable
publication, and there have been plenty of rumours that the deal
with Disney+ would result in an increased budget. £100 million
is quite astonishing, though!

Plus it makes sense that Disney+ would want to invest; and it
would've given new showrunner, Russell T Davies, further reason
to make such a deal alongside production team, Bad Wolf.

Broadcast reports that, as is, Doctor Who has a £1 million to
£3 million per episode budget, so with the £100 million estimate,
we can infer that we can expect 10 episodes per season,
potentially plus Christmas specials.

It's also heavily rumoured (and expected, really) that Disney+ is
keen for Davies and co. to develop spin-offs akin to The Sarah
Jane Adventures and Torchwood too.

Exciting times ahead, DWC readers...

UMM! Is my Maths failing me??

Shouldn't 100 million pounds buy you thirty-odd episodes at (max) three
million pounds per episode??

Or is that 100 million pounds allowing for three Series??

Or is that 100 million pounds allowing for budget for the revised "The
Sarah Jane Adventures" and "Torchwood" series as well??

No idea. Maybe it's just "Mickey Mouse mathematics". ;-)

The rumour is for *new* spin-off shows, not resurrecting those two old ones.

Maybe the Doctor's (clone) Daughter will finally get her own spin-off show.

It's all pure BULLSHIT!

£10 million per episode of Doctor Who? They must be joking.

No, wait, It's only 1 to 3 million. Where does the £100 million come
from then? From right up their arses that's where.

Looking at the most recent episodes the budget looks more like £600,000
per episode at best.

Spin-offs when the ratings have gone completely down the toilet, the
fans have been totally alienated and disenfranchised, and even David
Tennant, other former Doctors and former companions couldn't save
Whittaker's regeneration story from a total ratings disasters.

Doctor Who is dead! At most Disney+ paid no more than $10 per series,
considering that it was dropped by Netflix, Amazon, and HBO Max.

Here's a clue to those ignorant woke morons peddling pure lies.

When a broadcaster acquires a TV show it obtains the right to retain
that show in perpetuity as long as it pays a pre-agreed renewal fee.

Since Netflix refused to renew Doctor Who it went to Amazon at a much
reduced price, most probably 1/2 of what Netflix originally paid for it
because it wasn't even worth half the price of the renewal fee to retain it.

Then Amazon dropped it and HBO Max took it on for half the price and now
Disney+ are paying 1/8 of the original price paid by Netflix (plus a
decade's worth of inflation).

Seeing that each episode only costs £600,000 to make Disney+ would be
totally stupid to pay more than £12 million for a 10 episode series of
Doctor Who when it has its own Star Wars and Marvel properties to spend
£100 million on at £10 million per half hour long episode. So £12
million is the most Disney+ would consider paying per series for the
after broadcast streaming rights which are worth shit. Given that
Netflix, Amazon, and HBO no longer want this woke garbage, it's probably
more like £3 million that Disney+ is paying since the value of the show
has gone completely down the toilet.

Get Woke, Go Broke! as Elon Musk would say.

>    Exciting times ahead, DWC readers...
>

Only in fantasy land.

Disney+ probably has a 3 to 5 series deal, plus the rights to rerun
previous series after they expire from Amazon and HBO.

So, at best, it's probably paying 5 * £3 million for the new series plus
about another £15 million for the rights to previous series, thus £30
million in total, or $40 million, none of which, not a single penny or
cent will be going to funding Doctor Who whatsoever, because none of the
Netflix, Amazon, or HBO money went to funding Doctor Who either.

This is just another fantasy just like the lies that Doctor Who was sold
to China where movies and TV shows featuring time travel are banned by
the government, as are those featuring homosexuality.

The Fugitive Doctor would be a good candidate for a spin-off show,

Being honest, that was also my first reaction... online Doctor Who
nerds running riot with their fantasies, blah blah blah.

With Disney though, you just never know. They are able to throw money
at things if they want to.

I'll believe it when I see it though.

Disney won't revive the SJA... When the time comes, I'd expect a fresh, as
in brand new, spin-off, maybe featuring characters from next year's
'specials'.

It's likely - and reasonable to expect - that Disney would be interested

Can people stop being totally stupid and ignorant?

Disney has NO CONTROL WHATSOEVER over Doctor Who, and neither does Sony.
Neither of them are investing a single penny towards the production
budget of the show.

None of the money Disney+ is paying to show Doctor Who gives it any
control over the production of the show because that is controlled by
Sony, and Sony has no editorial control over the show whatsoever and
therefore cannot decide to commission any spin-offs without asking the
BBC for more money and complying with the BBC's retarded sexist and
racist editorial policy which defines what the spin-offs can be about.

Disney+ is a customer of the BBC. Customers don't dictate how a product
is made, or should look like, or what it should contain. They are stuck
with the product they buy as is.

The BBC is a client of Sony which is a service provider. Clients dictate
what service a service provider provides for them, whereas the service
provider decides in what manner they should carry out the provision of
that specific service and that service alone according the the client's
specifications and industry guidelines. If you go to a dentist and need
a filling then you are the client of the dentist and can decide what the
filling is made of or how it should look, but it is the dentist's
decision how to make it and apply it, and you have to pay for it. If you
go to a grocer to buy apples you get to choose what variety of apples to
buy as the customer, but it is the grocer's decision where those apples
come from, what size they should be, what varieties they stock, and how
they are grown, not yours. You can choose to by somewhere else if you
don't like them, just like you can choose a different dentist.

That is why the article being discussed is total bullshit.

Tough luck what Disney want. Disney *owns* the "Marvel" and "Star Wars"
franchises, so can do whatever they want with those ... often making it
a mess of it (a prime example being the horrible "Star Wars Sequel
Trilogy" with the inept JJ Abrams and all the moronic 'Politically
Correct' appeasement).

With the "Doctor Who" franchise, Disney only has an international
distribution deal, and so has no say in what is or isn't done with the
franchise - the BBC still owns the franchise. No doubt Disney could
make "suggestions" and threaten to pull out of the deal, but it's still
up to the BBC as to what actually happens.

Yep.

Disney will be paying a massive amount for the international
distribution rights, and at least some of that money *should* be going
back into the "Doctor Who" francise.

Yes and no. It is potentially possible that the distribution deal
included a clause for production money, but only the BBC and Disney
will now for sure. It would be a bad decision by the BBC though. A big
cheese like Disney will want things done their way and the show could
easily end up becoming heavily "Americanised" added to the 'Political
Correctness' box-ticking, making it even worse.

There will be plenty of PC appeasement under RTD with Doctor Who
anyway, it's a BBC show after all. I doubt Disney would add anything
different if they did have any say at any stage in the future.

I wouldn't think they'd pull out of the deal over the BBC/Bad Wolf
not taking up any of their suggestions... but I'm equally sure that
Disney - if they find Doctor Who a successful show for them - would
have their own ideas on taking the show forward in the international
markets.

Certainly, Disney has NO CONTROL WHATSOEVER ..... but that doesn't mean

We've seen what happened before when the BBC sold Doctor Who to Netflix,
then Amazon, and then HBO. Not a penny went to Doctor Who and the number
of episodes per season got lower and lower and lower. Disney+ will be
playing virtually sod all for the rights and none of it will be going to
Doctor Who. It's probably all going to go to the Department of Woke at
the Ministry of Truth to pay for people to do nothing all day except
practice Yoga just like at Twitter. The BBC should follow Elon Musk's
example and fire all of these woke morons that don't contribute anything
to the company.

No it didn't. It is Sony that exclusively produces Doctor Who and it has
nothing to do with Disney and is being paid entirely from BBC Licence
Fee money alone. Not one penny of Disney's money is going to Doctor Who
just like not a penny of HBS's money went to it either.

The BBC has not entered into any kind of co-production agreement with
Disney. Disney has no creative control whatsoever over Doctor Who. That
all lies with Sony.

The agreement signed by Disney probably goes like this:

1) The BBC will agree to provide Disney+ with a minimum of 10 episodes
of the series called Doctor Who per season, as the exclusive
international distributor, pending approval of each season in advance by
Disney+, for the fixed price of $3 million per season (going up 10% each
year plus UK annual inflation as of 5 May each year) for a fixed period
of no more than 5 seasons after which this contract will be
re-negotiated by the BBC with Disney+ as it's preferred international
distribution partner.

1a) Special one-off episodes which do not form part of a season will
only be made with the agreement of Disney+ and will only be offered to
Disney+ while this agreement is in force.

2) The BBC will retain all non-international distribution rights and
full editorial and production control of this intellectual property.

3) Disney+ will have the right to decline any new season of the show
after pre-screening. If this right is exercised this agreement will
automagically terminate and the international distribution rights for
all season from thence will return to the BBC.

4) The international distribution rights for each season Disney+ has
agreed to buy will remain with Disney+ for a period of no longer than 5
years after each complete season run on BBC One.

5) Disney+ will have the right to edit any episodes of the series for
broadcast in any way it sees fit, on condition that the edits do not
change the narrative essence or story of the episodes or the fundamental
nature of the series.

NO THEY CAN'T! RTD has FULL CREATIVE CONTROL over the series and he will
not be speaking to Disney+ or seeking their input because they are
nothing to do with him or Bad Wolf Productions/Sony, and he didn't even
know they were going to be distributing the show when he started writing it.

Disney+ will only have the right to reject a season in full and if it
chooses to do that for whatever reason (the series might not be making
them any money or they might want to go in another direction) then its
distribution agreement with the BBC will end.

If the show is a success it will be because RTD made it a success not
because of any ideas Disney+ might have for it in future. RTD would
therefore be totally stupid and incompetent to even listen to them.

The BBC cannot reach the international markets that Disney+ can, if
Doctor Who becomes a successful show FOR Disney [outside of the UK]
they will of course have ideas on how to grow their market and
increase viewing figures and subscribers... that's the aim of any
streaming service. I'm not claiming Disney themselves would make the
show a success or not, my point is Disney would of course have ideas
on what they want for the shows they carry on their service and
RTD/BBC can agree or disagree with them.

Only good can come for Doctor Who from being on Disney+ ...
