United States athletes, United States television networks, United
States corporate sponsors will continue to participate in the 2022
winter Olympics in Beijing. But the United States will not send
diplomats... to protest Chinese human rights abuses.

That'll larn 'em.

Yeah, at least in 1980, when there was a full boycott
by US athletes, we got to see some Hot Lesbian Sex Action
between Patrice Donnelly and Mariel Hemingway.

Will Israel join the US in the boycott against China for human rights abuses?

"Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez, D-N.J., called such a diplomatic boycott “a necessary step to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to human rights in the face of the Chinese government’s unconscionable abuses.” He called on “other allies and partners that share our values to join with the United States in this diplomatic boycott.”

It's at least some TINY measure against the creatures sucking up to China. Meaningless, or effect-less probably, but better than
the Western international business community, some of whose leaders should be tried for treason.

Mariel was fearless as an actress. She was a joy to watch in my not so

Sen. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) on Monday slammed President Joe Biden for his
"half-measure" boycott of China's upcoming winter Olympics, which the senator
called insufficient because the United States will still send athletes to the
games.

"The President has once again opted for a half measure, when bold leadership
was required," Cotton said. "The United States should fully boycott the
Genocide Games in Beijing. American businesses should not financially support
the Chinese Communist Party and we must not expose Team USA to the dangers of
a repugnant authoritarian regime that disappears its own athletes."

White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced earlier that day that the
Biden administration will initiate a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Olympics
over the "ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other
human rights abuses." The United States will not dispatch government
officials to avoid validating a perception of the games as "business as
usual," Psaki said, but will still send athletes to compete in Beijing.

U.S. lawmakers have in recent months called for a boycott of the games,
citing China's oppression of Uyghur Muslims and last month's disappearance of
Peng Shuai, a Chinese tennis star who accused a former top regime official of
sexually assaulting her.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian accused the United States of
"grandstanding" with its boycott and vowed that China "will take firm
countermeasures" in response.

U.S. allies, including Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, are
reportedly also mulling a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics.

What they do not get I suppose is that boycotts do not work against fanatics, especially those in self-sufficient countries. N. Korea, Iran are proof of that in that they are NOT
self-sufficient yet still weather boycotts that would wither Western countries.

Canada announced today that they'd be matching the US boycott formula
which I agree with the good senator is wimpy beyond belief.

We're talking the usual Chinese crimes but specific to Canada taking
our citizens hostage (not just the Michaels though that is bad enough)
as well as documented interference in our elections.

OTOH I vividly remember Jimmy Carter's stupid and ineffective boycott
of the Moscow Olympics. Those kids were supposed to pay the tab for
Carter's inability to do much of anything about the Soviets and
Afghanistan. The athletes were crushed, of course, and they had every
right to feel that way. BTW Carter held a phony medal ceremony for the
Olympians shortly after. Many didn't want to go, but attendance turned
out to be compulsory -- that is, they and their schools were threatened
with loss of funding and future access, and of course some still hoped
to make the next Olympics. Even the athletes who were (unsuccessfully)
suing Carter had to attend and just stand there silently while Carter
draped them with phony medals. A few said later that they pitched
them.

Jimmah made me register for the draft. I was so scary I was going to get
the Rooskies out of Afghanistan.

Let's not forget that the Rooskies invading Afghanistan was kind of his
fault in the first place for screwing around there.

Carter only beat Ford 51-49 despite Ford's pardon of Nixon.

Carter's most embarassing moment had to be his "Moral Equivalent of
War" speech which was on energy self-sufficiency and was an excellent
speech but the worst possible acronym which the press used to ridicule
a fairly serious presentation on the subject.

https://www.cato.org/blog/four-decades-moral-equivalent-war

Even with that lapse he would have been reelected had he either not
attempted an Iranian rescue or been successful at it. (Which based on
the plan I considered a long shot) After it failed Carter was "dead
man walking" politically against Reagan.

I think Biden is too, but I'd support him if he showed just a tad more backbone: (Maybe he is?)

CNN)Chinese and Russian state media are working in overdrive to denigrate the Biden administration's Summit for Democracy taking place this week, calling the project hypocritical.
A flurry of tweets from Chinese diplomats refer to the event as a "so-called" democracy summit, while a Russian political commentator writing in a state-run Chinese newspaper compared the US initiative to "a mistress of a brothel teaching morale [sic] to schoolgirls."
That the media blitz is coming from official mouthpieces — and not shadowy bots and trolls —reflects anxiety over US efforts to rally support for democratic norms and potentially isolate Beijing and Moscow in the process, experts on authoritarian propaganda tell CNN.

"[China and Russia] see this as an opportunity to exacerbate cynicism in the political West and undermine any headlines that come out of this summit," said Jessica Brandt, policy director for the Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology Initiative at the Brookings Institution.

'An alternate view'

It's a familiar playbook, the type of influence operation that the US will likely have to contend with for years as it competes with the repressive governments to shape global opinions on governance, according to analysts.
"You're seeing this really concerted effort [from China] to undermine US democracy and put forward an alternate view," said Kenton Thibaut, a resident China fellow at the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab.

Ford's "re-election" (which is how the dopes of the time described it)
almost succeeded. He was coming back strong, perhaps because people
were digesting the idea of Carter actually becoming president. The
election was on Nov 2, the earliest possible date. If it had been even
a few days later, I think Ford might have squeaked it.

The Iran hostage thing happened because David Rockefeller persuaded
Carter to allow the Shah of Iran to come into the country for treatment
of his cancer. Carter was an idiot for allowing it. The Iranian
radicals had promised there would be consequences.

Don't make me defend Jimmah!

I've said this before and I'll say it again: You want to give your vile
dictators a soft landing somewhere. Why? They won't leave. The worst
possible human rights violations, like the Holocaust, tend to occur when
the regime is about to lose a war or is on its last legs.

Actually the majority of Jews killed in the Holocaust were killed
before the end of 1942 - e.g. before Stalingrad

https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.aau7292

with April - August being the worst months. There was another but
smaller spike in the spring / summer of 1944.

From my reading at least so far as the eastern front is concerned
Stalingrad (August 1942 - Jan 1943) proved the Germans couldn't win
while Kursk (June/July/Aug 1943) proved the Soviets WOULD win.

In the west the Germans were driven out of Africa Dec 1942 - May 1943
(and in the end lost nearly as many men at Tunis as at Stalingrad with
fighting in Italy 1943-45 and France (summer 1944 - end)

By July 1944 (e.g. the breakout from Normandy) the vast majority of
Holocaust victims had already been murdered. At that point Germany was
NOT "on its last legs" though it clearly wasn't looking good for them.
