I am rekindling this one post thread of Amir Minai SaaHib's on the Pakistani poet, Habib Jalib (1928-1993). Before Raj Kumar SaaHib says, "I can't see Hoshiarpur in Pakistan", I shall tell him that his eye sight is not failing him!:-) He wrote about the country's leaders, both dictators and those who were democratically elected. He served time in prison on a number of occasions.

In Urdu Ghazal, there is mention of the poet's beloved but not his wife! At least it is not a common occurrence. I was listening to his recitation of four Ghazals of his on a Youtube video and in the very first Ghazal he mentions a shi3r which he wrote with his wife especially in mind.

tuu ik Haqiiqat hai mirii jaaN merii ham-dam
jo thii merii GhazloN meN vuh ik vahm-o-gumaaN thii

He was in Kot Lakhpat Jail at the time and he relates that his wife and children came to visit him. Police and Jail staff were present too and he could tell in his wife's eyes that she is saying there is no money to pass the time. He could n't tell her to borrow from so and so because that would have implied that person was associated with him and was assisting him and this would have resulted in that person's arrest! Oh and regarding the Rajendar Krishan/Lata Mangeshkar song "tumhi mere mandir, tumhi meri puuja...", it is an absolute classic, I love it too. Such a melodious song, the ultimate ode to a husband, but still from a male perspective!
Of course, which man wouldn't like a beautiful, dutiful Nutan singing a lullaby to her husband, calling him "devtaa and farishtaa". Very nice, but again can we think of any such songs/poems written by any female poets?! I can't at the moment.

I guess it works both ways. :-)

According to Urdu LuGhut, definition of a Ghazal is "luGhvii ma3nii 3aratoN ke saath baat-chiit aur 3ishq baazii......". Based on this a wife is included but mother, sister and daughter are excluded!:-)

aap kii tasHiiH par maiN "bar-ham", yih to ho nahiiN saktaa. chaliye mere tavassut se aap ko siikhne-sikhaane kaa mauqa3 mil jaataa hai. shaayad mujh jaise "remedial" (chaarah-paziir?) shaagirdoN kii bhii rahnumaa'ii ho jaa'e? mujhe kitaab kii ba-jaa'e shaa3ir kii zabaan par inHisaar karnaa chaahiye thaa!

yeh she'r aek lambi nazm meN se hai jo shaa'ir ki kitaab "gaNj-e-ma'aani" meN darj hai. nazm ka 'scenario' yeh hai k shaa'ir ki aihliya qareeb-ul-marg haiN aur shaa'ir is aane vaale saanihe se ghabraa kar zaar zaar ro rahaa hai. aisi suurat-e-Haal meN, un ki aihliya unheN rone se man'a karti haiN. javaab meN, shaa'ir ka kahna hai k "tum mujhe to rone se baar baar rokti ho magar jis safar par tum aamada(h) ho, kyaa mere zaar zaar rone se apna iraada na badlo gi; goyaa, (kuchh der ke liye) jaane se ruko gi nahiiN", etc.

maiN "roktii ho" aur "ruko gii" kaa mutavaqqi3 thaa! yih Ghazal to hai nahiiN kih muzakkar siiGhah isti3maal kiyaa jaa'e.
