I don't know if I like the style in which it is shot, I like
it more calm and just showing whatever goes on, but an
interesting experiment nonetheless and with some natural
cuteness to it.

That was crazy hard for just a $500K prize. I wish they had explained what really happened from Day 34 to Day 39 when they had no power. They picked two likable people to do this. Was this streamed live?

No idea but probably that video clip is all that

This reminds me a lot - and frankly seems like a variant of - a reality show
called Solitary that ran for a few seasons. Here's the Wikipedia summary:

It says,

The show's theme is based on solitary confinement;
accordingly, the contestants are placed in isolated pods,
with only an artificial intelligence named Val to
communicate with. In reality, Val's voice is
a computer-modified human voice [...] Val also often makes
references to the fact that she is a computer (e.g.
by saying "If I had feelings, they would be hurt right
now").

Sounds interesting!

I tried to watch other reality TV shows when they were
everywhere in the late 90s/early 00s, but Survivor was the
only one I saw more than 1-3 episodes of.

Maybe I'm finally understimulated enough to make them
interesting!

But in theory there should be no end to all kinds of
interesting shows and exotic, interesting, difficult
situations to put everyday people in to see what happens.

Sounds like Bailey and Suzy had it easier even if they were isolated longer.. Having someone to interact with would make a huge difference.

Follow-up video from Suzie concerning what she did with the money she won. I'm impressed! Not only is she a good person, she's smart!

Looks like something might have happened! They did a Q&A video where they answered fan questions. They addressed the power outage so now I can sleep well tonight. lol

Everyone else's mileage may vary on this, but for me the worst reality show
from the early 00s was a dating show called Chains of Love. If Solitary was
about forced isolation from other people, this was the opposite. Each
episode was like the Bachelor or Bachelorette in concept, except the person
had his or her four potential dates from the opposite sex all
chained/handcuffed to them 24 hours a day for four days and nights except
for occasional allowed bathroom breaks or brief periods where the players
were allowed to shower/change clothes. The rest of the time (including
sleeping) they were all chained together and forced to go on dates together
and do other tasks like shopping, etc. I guess the local authorities must
have been notified that these five people traipsing around in chains
handcuffed together weren't escapees from a chain gang. For confessional
interviews, the four people not interviewed had to put on headphones like
they do on Hells Kitchen during the blind taste test. The contestant was
given a whopping $10,000 to spend on the date or keep for themselves or
share with the dates.

Every 24 hours or so they would be interrupted by a grim reaper like
character called the Lockmaster (yep, that's what he was called) who would
show up randomly and the main person would have to decide which person to
let go and that person was then released. The whole thing was pretty
amazing in its decadent sleaziness, and as bad as it was, it was one of
those shows where I just couldn't look away. It lasted six episodes and
each episode had a different contestant and dates.

A form of social torture I didn't hear of, granted.

But I would check out Solitary if episodes can be
downloaded somewhere.

It depends, you can get cabin fever also and start being
annoyed by every single little thing the other person does or
says, and the other person has the same thing for you. And the
more you try to suppress it and don't act it out, the worse
it gets.

Maybe they selected people who they believed would stay in
the cube.

Maybe it helped them that they didn't know each other?

They definitely cast people who they thought might last the whole time. The video wouldn't have had the same impact if they had left halfway through.

I'd say it did help that they didn't know each other. It also helped that this challenge lasted for 100 days because that gave them enough time to know if they could trust each other at the end. It also didn't hurt that they're both very likable.

Suzie said they've already shot something else with Mr. Bean but I don't think it's been released yet. Based on comments I've read, it sounds like they might be the first people in one of his videos to try and cash in on the exposure they got.

There are a couple of complete Solitary episodes on YouTube,
let's see if this is a show for me then.

"Solitary 3.0 - Episode 1 - Battle of the Pods" (01:04:01)

I don't know if this program concept is better than what we
saw in the cube, because what was interesting in the cube was
how they coped with the situation (even tho we got to see too
little of that and too much focus on what to buy), but in
Solitary OTOH you seem to be at the complete mercy of that
computerized voice.

They should build a little dystopian but high tech
science fiction world and let the people be free in that
world.

Not a lot of challenges, the main challenge should be figuring
out the world and not quitting when you are sleeping by
a burning barrel under artificial rain.

Also there shouldn't be any interventions from the real, or
outside world. Like a live role playing game but a competition
at the same time.

The players should not be allowed to use clothes from the real
world, everything should be "in game". It would be interesting
to see how fast their new identities started to kick in!

I'd like to play that game and see the show as well :)

It's not exactly what you're talking about, but the William Shatner hosted
Stars on Mars at least had a sci-fi theme and a very realistic setting where
it was filmed in a town in Australia that actually looked like it could be
on Mars.

There's also the 2014 US series Utopia - again, not exactly what you're
talking about, but in the ballpark.

I remember that one but didn't watch it. Between Survivor, Big Brother
and The Apprentice (I'm pretty sure that was when Trump was running
it) I felt I didn't need any more 'reality'

Sounds like your review pretty much lines up with what I heard at the
time.... still can't believe I watched 3 seasons of the Apprentice!
(That's after having seen him in WWF/WWE before that)

You don't want to hear about my first 6 months of marriage!

Trump hosted ALL seasons of the US Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice
except for the final season which was hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger and an
alternate version hosted by Martha Stewart. If I have the counts right,
Trump hosted seven seasons of regular Apprentice and seven seasons of
Celebrity Apprentice, Schwarzenegger hosted one season of CA and Martha
Stewart did one season of her own version.

And of course there are various international versions hosted by people most
of us have never heard of.

Regarding Trump's version of the show, the first few seasons of regular
Apprentice weren't terrible and the show kind of reached its peak with
season 4 which had the strongest two finalists and where Trump flirted with
the idea of naming co-winners. After six seasons, Trump switched over to
Celebrity Apprentice and returned to the original format one final time in
Season 10 which was the weakest and final regular season. That season was
also unique in that it was the only time they did not do a live finale, but
instead recorded two different ending scenes in which each finalist was told
they had won. Supposedly, it wasn't until the final episode actually aired
that the finalists learned which of them had actually won. It was bizarre.

I remember the first season of The Apprentice being huge on TV. On finale night I was excited to see who would win and anxiously waited for the show to air in the west. While I was waiting, I was flipping through the channels and was spoiled by the ticker on CNBC. I was livid when that happened. Didn't think an NBC-related network would spoil what was probably their biggest show at the time. Now, I watch the east coast feeds of nearly everything to avoid being spoiled.
