Robert Rodriguez’s Gender-Flipped Zorro Series Moves To The CW

Over a year ago, word broke that Robert Rodriguez was teaming up with his
sister, Rebecca Rodriguez, on a new Zorro TV series that aimed to
re-imagine the legendary pulp character as a female vigilante. The show was
originally set up at NBC. However, it looks like the project is changing
hands to a network that’s already home to several other colorful heroes.
According to Deadline, Zorro is now in development at The CW.

Additionally, the report confirms that Sean Tretta is joining the Rodriguez
siblings as a writer on the new show. Tretta previously worked as a writer
and producer on FX’s Mayans M.C. and SYFY’s 12 Monkeys. He will also serve
as Zorro’s day-to-day showrunner with both Rodriguezes executive producing
and Rebecca directing.

When Zorro was announced in late 2020, it was reported that the series
would introduce Sola Dominguez, an underground artist who dons her own mask
and cape and fights for justice. Deadline doesn’t mention whether any of
these story details will carry over to The CW’s version. But the report
claims that the main character’s journey will begin after she joins a
secret society to avenge her father’s murder.

This isn’t the only new Zorro series in the works. Just last month, Wilmer
Valderrama revealed plans to play Zorro in another show for Disney+, which
Valderrama will also produce. Apparently, that series will be presented in
a “contemporary telenovela style.”

Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, and Rodney Ferrell are executive producing
Zorro as well through their Propgate banner alongside CBS Studios. The
producing team also includes Geoff Clark and Eric Bromberg, Jay Weisleder,
and Zorro Property, Inc.’s John Gertz.
