Here in New Zealand, Government taxes account for 48% of the price of
petrol. In Auckland city it's even worse thanks to a regional tax that
increases government taxes to 52% of the price of petrol.

For each litre of petrol (current average price US$2.04 per litre), the
government takes:

US$0.48 for National Land Transport Fund
US$0.04 for Accident Compensation Corportion Motor Vehicle Account
US$0.45 for Local Authorities Fuel Tax
US$0.04 for Petroleum or Engine Fuels Monitoring Levy

for Auckland there is also:
US$0.07 for Auckland Regional Fuel Tax

plus:
15% Government Sales Tax on the toal pump price (so a tax on the taxes!)

Then there's the stupidity that that Regional Fuel Tax that they have

detailing bad news, but one can almost sense the smiles on your faces

Since Emperor Newsom refused to give up his emergency powers, he's now
facing pressure from the public and some prominent politicians within
his own party to wave his autocratic hand and suspend our gas tax for a
year, which would instantly drop the price by more than a dollar/gallon.

So far he's refused.

That might convince a number of people who live in more rural areas to
push for vote by mail so they don't have to travel tens or even
hundreds of miles to vote.

Of course not, but it might work for some people who live in similar
sorts of areas as the activist journos. If it's reasonable to walk or
ride a bike then it's reasonable to suggest people give it a try at
least some of the time. If you live where most of my family does it
makes no sense to even suggest it since their work tends to require
them to drive considerable distances on a daily basis.
