I watched:

WE ARE THE 80'S

WE ARE THE 80'S

WE ARE THE 80'S

RIP TIDE:
This week's Decades binge.

CHEERS:
"The Heart Is A Lonely Snipehunter". Diane persuades the guys to include
Frasier on an outing, but she's furious when they leave him in the woods
hunting the ever-elusive "snipe."

CHEERS:
"Abnormal Psychology". Diane believes the hostility between Frasier and his
icy colleague Dr. Lilith Sternin, aka "Dr. Sigmund Frost," whom he must
debate on TV, is actually love, so she persuades the woman to

CHEERS:
"Dinner At Eightish". To celebrate their first week of cohabitation, Frasier
and Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) invite Sam and Diane over for dinner, an event
that turns into a verbal battle between the hosts. And things.

CHEERS:
"Showdown". Sam's successful, intelligent and thoroughly charming brother
Derek visits and soon spirits Diane off to Nantucket.

CHEERS:
"Showdown". Diane decides to fly off to Paris with Sam's dashing brother,
then hopes Sam will try to talk her out of it.

CHEERS:
"Bar Wars". The gang, pride and bowling trophy dented, engages in prank-to-
prank combat with their rivals over at Gary's Olde Towne Tavern.

CHEERS:
"It's Lonely On The Top". Secrets are exposed after a night of drinking
Carla's potent brew. Tops among them: a hair-raising revelation from Sam, and
a confession that Carla slept with one of the regulars.

CHEERS:
"One For The Road". Sam makes plans to move to California with Diane.

LOVE BOAT:
It's Julie's high school reunion TV movie!
This ep starts with the crew grousing to Captain Stubing about Julie
micromanaging everyone because she wants everything to be perfect for
the Haley High School reunion.
"Disco Baby". Two of Julie's classmates are a famous pair of
unmarried disco dancers who are on the outs.. The woman barely sets foot
on board whne she gets cramps. Uh oh, we know what THAT means! Julie,
naturally, is interested in him and flirts incesantly with the man
despite Stubing's long-established "don't date the guests" policy.
Later, on the Lido deck, the pair lead some bizare disco dance lessons
while the camera tilts and pans back and forth, giving the impression
they're drunken or stoned (so THAT'S where that clip in the ad for this
show on MTtv came!). Sherie begs Julie to back off, but the guys
convince Julie to ignore her (and the Captain's orders since this show
began). At the farewall disco, the couple reconnect in a dimly lit disco
dance sequence when wife faints. Yeah, just as I suspected; she's
pregnant! Upon hearing the news, Julie backs off and lets them
reconcile.
"Alas, Poor Dwyer". Raymond Burr plays Steve Newport, a bitter
drunkard musical theatre teacher at Julie's school. After finding him
drunk in a deck chair wearing a life preserver, the captain tells Isaac
to stop serving him. Are they allowed to do that and is Isaac the only
bartender on this ship? Captain Stubing takes Newport to a dry bar for
lunch but leaves in a huff after overhearing Gilligan and another
student talking poorly about him but conveniently before they agree he
was their best teacher. When they're ready to leave port, Newport is
nowhere to be found but before they are forced to leave without him, he
is returned by some Mexican cops and he gives Captain Stubing a "Happy
Birthday, General!" cake. Stubing forces him to drink coffee the next
morning, then confesses he was an alcoholic too and almost ran over a
child on way to work one day and never drank since. Hmm, I am sure we've
seen him drink adult beverages before. At the farewell disco, Newport
gets a class award for being such a great teacher and voew to remain
sober.
"After the War". A man and his wife dread meeting a friend who became
a cripple in Vietnam while they fled to Canada and became entrepenuers.
The husband whines incesantly about what happened to them. They
eventually meet their crippled vet classmate but don't have the courage
to tell him what they did. Later, the couple come across their
wheelchair-bound friend swapping war stories with classmates and the
crew and he makes up some story about having a desk job. Since when were
the crew in 'Nam? Later, while whining to his wife AGAIN, he lets it
slip that his reasons for going to Canada weren't as idealistic as hers.
At the farewell disco, he confesses the truth his friend, but he already
knew b/c his mother told him and wanted him to say it himself. blah blah
blah. As they disembark, the couple vow to hire as many disabled vets as
they can. Damn, I didn't know they did Vietnam stories before 1980!
"Ticket to Ride". A female classmate of Julie's received her tickets
to the cruise from a secret admirer, along with a sorta creepy note
about "holding his breath until he dies". She meets a nerdy classmate
who barely scraped enough money to get a ticket and then totally ignores
him when he tries to give her flowers because she's excited to find out
who gave her the tickets. Gee, I wonder who it is! To make a long story
short (too late!), she screws around with several guys, including
Gilligan, she thinks gave her the tickets, only to dump them as soon as
she learns they're not the one. At the farewell disco, she realizes she
wasted her time looking for her secret admirer and screwing guys looking
for him. Julie tell her to just enjoy herself and dances the night away.
When she disembarks at the end of the cruise, she discovers what we knew
all along. The nerd who couldn't attend did it.
"Itsy Bitsy". At the begining of the cruise, the guys are oggling a
picture of a phys ed teacher in Julie's yearbook and acting like pigs.
Since Doc "popped his thermometer" after seeing her photo, he asked
Julie to set him up on a date, but she turns out to be Charlie Bananas'
maid. Lots of fat jokes were made, which is odd b/c she's not nearly as
fat as she is now and she wasn't roundish at all. After an initial
hesitation, Doctor Bricker and her get along well, but during a dance,
Goofer interuptted them about an emergency and she takes it wrong. After
tending to Newport, he makes up with her and Goofer and Isaac apologize
for making fat jokes. At the farewell disco. Doc and her vow to meet in
Gay Bay and stop at all the restaurants along the cable car's route.

LIFE, LIBERTY, AND LEVIN:
Fox News host Mark Levin pushes back on Democrats' Roe v Wade outrage.
Former U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman joins 'Life, Liberty & Levin' to weigh in
on the Supreme Court's ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, and what the decision
means for the Constitution.

HOW THE UNIVERSE WORKS:
Several eps, mostly about black holes and Franken-eps".

I focused yesterday on cleaning my bedding and rotating my mattress
yesterday, so I mostly watched golf and didn't watch any movies (on
streaming). But I did get through more of...:

The Last Kingdom (Netflix) - Ep's #5.3 & 5.4.
These were really good episodes, especially #5.4 - the scene with
Uhtred and Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth) after Aethelflaed has died and
Aelswith loses her faith was one of the best scenes in the whole
series, if not the best.
Uhtred and his forces sneak into [York] and rescue his daughter
Stiorra just in time, and rout Brida's forces. Brida foolishly gets her
daughter killed (I enjoyed that it was entirely her fault!), but
manages to capture Father Pyrlig on her escape from [York] - more good
scenes here, as Brida also suffers from a loss in faith in her "gods",
which Pyrlig helps Brida through, which was incredibly charitable of
him considering Brida was earlier torturing him!
Finan finally informs Uhtred that Aethelflaed Queen of the Mercians
is dying, and he abandons the search for Brida, and races to return to
Aethelflaed, which he does, just before she dies.
King Edward then is a complete dick and displaces Aethelflaed's
chosen successor - her headstrong daughter Aelfwynn - by killing all of
the Mercian ealdorman. This doesn't quite seem to follow this history,
as Aelfwynn actually ruled for about 6 months before being deposed, but
she escapes with Aelswith before the end of the episode, so let's see
how the show portrays this.
Looking forward to the last 6 episodes!
And I just discovered today that Netflix let them produce a feature
film-length followup conclusion to the series that will presumably be
released later this year. That's smart of them, as it'll force me to
keep Netflix a little bit longer!... :/ ;)

golf - Yikes! Patrcik Cantlay has been one of my picks to be one of the
next "greats" in golf, but he fell apart so spectacularly on the final
day of the Travelers that it has really shaken my belief in the
proposition! :S
This allowed Day 3 leader Xander Schauffele to pretty much walk away
with this. Rookie Sahith Theegala surged in the middle, to look like he
would also be in contention, but stumbled at the end as rookies do, and
fell back. There was also some amazing play from a 20(!)-year old
amateur(!!) named Michael Thorbjornsen, who also sprung in contention
and looked like he might be able to win this, but like Theegala he
stumbled at the end.

The Old Man (recorded) - "III" (ep. #3). This episode wasn't nearly as
good as the first two episodes, I thought. There was one really good
twist involving Dan Chase's daughter (which I admit - I totally did not
see coming) which was what carried the episode. But, aside from that,
we find out that the CIA guy assigned to the case is roundly unpopular,
even at the CIA. And we get some (generally uninteresting) background
on Chase's time in Afghanistan in the 80s. Oh, and the hit "team" that
Harold Harper sent after Chase forces Chase to go on the run - but what
happened to Zoe?! (This is a dumb "cliffhanger", as they've already
shown us with upcoming scenes from the series that Zoe is going with
Dan... >:/ ).

Ice Road Killer (Lifetime) - First I didn't pay my full attention to
this TV flick. Second, I was kind of disappointed in how it turned out
- they end up killing off Zoe Belkin's thief character, which I kind of
felt ruined the whole thing for me. Also, the "killer" was generally
uncompelling here (maybe it was commentary on the "banality of evil"?!
- if so, they did it poorly).

"Who would ever do this to him!?" - HottCiara on DOOL (04-27-2020), asking
who would stab Victor Kirakis... How about ANYONE WHO'S EVER MET HIM??!!

It's golf. Is there really anything more to say other than someone hit

This sounds vaguely familiar.

I was able to get through a bunch of movies. I watched:

The Wizard of Oz (4K disc) Classic 1939 musical starring Judy Garland as
a young woman who kills a stranger, steals the stranger's shoes, then
assembles a hit squad to assassinate the stranger's sister. I have this
movie in 3D and as I recall the 3D version is breathtaking. I had heard
the 4K version was even better and while I didn't do a side-by-side
comparison, I'm sure the 3D version looked better than the 4K version.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with the 4K version, I just recall
the 3D version being brighter and more vibrant, and just overall looking
absolutely stunning. That wow factor was missing from the 4K version IMO.

Return to Oz (blu-ray) 1985 sequel to "The Wizard of Oz" starring
Fairuza Balk as Dorothy Gale. Following her original adventures in Oz
no one believes her stories, so to cure Dorothy of her delusions she is
sent to a mental hospital where they hope to cure her using electroshock
therapy. Dorothy escapes the hospital and finds herself back in Oz, but
soon discovers the Emerald City is in ruins and everyone has either been
turned to stone or decapitated. And in some instances, both! So,
Dorothy does what she always does, she raises an army and sets out to
kill someone.

I love this movie. It's dark, scary, and depressing, the way movies for
children are supposed to be. If only Disney had advertised this as the
nightmare fueled horrorfest that it is, instead of falsely advertising
it as a happy-go-lucky sequel it wouldn't have flopped at the box
office. It is after all a *better* movie that the first one. Yeah, I
said it, it is better! You can't watch the scene of Dorothy running
down the hall of decapitated heads as they open their eyes and scream at
her and not clearly see that this is a better movie in every conceivable
way.

And the scene of them falling to their deaths when at the last moment
before they crash, they pull up and fly away as the music swells never
fails to put a huge smile on my face. Before I forget, I have to
mention the movie's score. It has a great score that I regularly enjoy
listening too. That near death sequence is probably my favorite part of
the score. Although the score overall is excellent from beginning to end.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWxUi-54qsw&list=WL&index=75

The Craft (4k disc) 1996 horror movie starring Fairuza Balk, Robin
Tunney, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True as the Charmed ones. I mean 4
teenage girls who discover they can work real magic after Robin Tunney's
character moves to town. At first, they use their new powers to make
their personal problems go away, but soon Fairuza's increasingly psycho
character decides they don't need Tunney anymore. Skeet Ulrich also
costars as a local boy who winds up on the wrong end of a hex after
rubbing them the wrong way. I'm not sure if I ever noticed this before
or not but Neve Campbell and Skeet Ulrich also starred together that
same year in "Scream." Anyway, the movie holds up great. However there
has been a lot of online controversy over this new 4K transfer. People
have been complaining that the 4K transfer is horrible and demanding the
studio recall the disc. The studio that released it (ShoutFactory) has
so far steadfastly refused. The studio pointed to a glowing review of
the disc on blu-ray.com but following the backlash blu-ray.com pulled
their review. I wasn't overly impressed with the picture quality, but
if it hadn't been pointed out to me, I doubt I would have flagged any
issues worthy of a recall.

The Craft: Legacy (Blu-ray) 2020 direct to video sequel that follows a
new group of Charmed Ones who have surprisingly similar experiences to
the last group. Cailee Spaeny takes over as the new girl who comes to
town and helps 3 other girls form a coven. The first half of this movie
is pretty much a rehash of the first movie. The big difference is the
parents this time around have more of a role to play with Michelle
Monaghan playing the mom and David Duchovny playing the obviously evil
stepdad who needs to be vanquished by the Charmed ones. The highlight
is Fairuza Balk's far to brief cameo confirming this is a sequel set in
the same universe.

Devil's Diary (Amazon streaming) 2017 Canadian made for TV movie. It
aired in the U.S. on Lifetime. This has been on my watch list for a
long time. It's basically a Canadian version of "Death Note." The
movie starts with one evil high school girl getting her hands on a diary
where pretty much whatever evil thing she writes will happen. The diary
going from evil mean girl to evil mean girl as the mean girls at the
school battle for control of the book with a group of nice kids trying
to stop them. Miriam McDonald (Degrassi: The Next Generation) plays one
of the mean girls, but Deanna Casaluce (also from Degrassi: The Next
Generation) steals the movie, chewing every scene she's in, as an evil
cheerleader who gets her hands on the book and uses it to the full
potential. Brian Krause pops up as a priest who knows about the book.

And starring Alexz Johnson of "Instant Star"!!

I saw this years ago. I think I thought it was OK, but didn't live up
to its potential (kind of like "Forget Me Not"), IIRC.

I feel like TNT is pretty much done with this show and just wants to get it
out of the way as quick as possible.

A vile person wrapped up in such a lovely package...

Honestly, I'm much more interested in the 'past' storyline than the 'present'
storyline. They should just make a YOUNG SMURF spin-off show.

Which doesn't really make any sense. It was Smurf who ruined his mom, not her
kids. And he already got his revenge on Smurf when he blew her brains out.

I think my reaction was the same the first time I saw it. But for
whatever reason I liked it a lot more this time. Maybe because I've
been wanting to see it again for so many years.

That would track with how they are also treating "Snowpiercer".

It's clear that the new bean counters in charge of Warner Discover want
to get their cable channels out of the scripted TV biz as quickly as
possible...

I actually was seriously thinking about getting Starz for 1-2 months
this summer. But then my summer job went away, and I decided I wasn't

Yeah, I am thinking I could probably eat for what I’m spending on Cox cable
at this point.

Oh yeah, my cable bill has gotten to the point where even I have
seriously been considering dropping cable. I think if LMN ever stops
running actual Lifetime movies, I will finally pull the trigger and
dump cable. I will just have to find something that will carry or
replace the channels/content I care about (e.g. PGA golf).

I was comparing notes with a friend in Sandy Eggo about an hour ago about
our Internet plans. I went in to get the current specs on my plan and to
see what upgrades were available to me. I hit the most annoying roadblock
I’ve ever hit.

If you have current service Cox cable will no longer let you see what other
plans are available. You have to put in your full Social Security number,
and your Cox PIN, in order to talk to a salesman.

There’s clearly no way in hell that’s going to happen.

The information is available if you can convince the system that you don’t
currently have a Cox account by putting in a neighbors address. It’s just
blocked from actual users.

That would be nice. But Cox bought off the city councils so they could do
pretty much whatever they want.
