I know we talked about the prospect of various US celebrities moving to
Canada recently so this article caught my eye:

https://globalnews.ca/news/8996261/americans-move-canada/

Since this article is NOT about celebrities, I've added an "[OT]" to the
start of the subject line.

It seems the number of Americans moving to Canada *is* increasing. Mind
you, some of the reasoning being used by these aspiring Canadians seems
more than a little weak.

Americans who are able to move to Canada will find out a few things.
Take-home pay as a percentage of salary will be lower than for the
equivalent amounts pretty well anywhere in the US. You will not need to
purchase health insurance, but don't expect quick service if you need a
doctor or even slow service if you need surgery or other complex
treatment. But you won't lose your house if you have a serious illness
or are in a bad car accident. People will be polite and will talk to you
in stores, the elevator, (except in Toronto where nobody talks to
anyone) and on the street. Travel from city to city by car will be a
pain because even the much vaunted Trans-Canada Highway is a pale
imitation of the Interstate system, although there are a few big,
limited access highways here and there. No one will talk about guns,
except a few hunters in the Alberta foothills. Westerners will grouse
about Ontario and Quebec voters who keep choosing Liberals (our version
of Democrats) as their national government. Quebecers will complain
about western oil and gas except in the winter. Everyone ignores the
Atlantic provinces. We call them eaves troughs, not rain gutters. It's
junior high school, not middle school. No one uses the term "freshman"
or "sophomore" to describe first and second year university students.
And almost no one goes away to "college". It's university here since
most 4-year institutes of post-secondary learning offer advanced
degrees. And most everything is metric. Centimeters, kilometers,
kilograms, Celsius, etc. But golf is done in yards, so is football (12 a
side, 110 yard field, 3 downs, multiple players in motion).

That should be enough to get you started. Welcome!

I remember when I was dating a mapleback, I had to accustom myself to
their bizarre and inscrutable practices whenever she'd take me home for
visits.

When I was a kid, we used to go to St.Thomas Ontario a couple of times
each summer, as dad had Polish friends from the war living there and
once when we were at the beach in Port Stanley, I ordered some fries
and when I doused them in ketchup, it was all thin and vinegary, which
I was told is how Canadians like it (it was ok).

Kudos, dude, this is a really well written post. I think I'm going to
have give you a free pass even though you have a fake name. That's a
huge honor, at least in my mind.

That's not the way ketchup/catsup is available here in Western Canada.
Regular pound-the-bottom-of-the-bottle is standard, although now we have
the space age type squeeze bottle that gets the stuff out before the
fries go cold.

You have to shake the bottle first and that mixes the liquid part better
with the solids so it moves better. Just make sure the lid's on it
before shaking...

With all due respect would you rather have 400k people from the United
States or the PRC?

Seems to me that Justin Trudeau has made up his mind and it's NOT the
United States!

As the slow implosion of the US into a nakedly authoritarian and
kleptocratic banana republic accelerates, we can expect such refugee
flows to continue to grow, and to begin showing up here in Europe as
well before long.

We'll know the end is near when the refugees being harassed, shot at,
arrested, put into camps, and sometimes killed at the US-Mexico border
are heading south.

It works better if you pound more toward the neck, where the raised 57s
are on a bottle of Heinz.

I just squirt the watery part down the sink drain before each use.

I don't think you can get quick service in the US unless you're the
president, I've called 5 or 6 doctors in my town before and none of them
were accepting new patients. I usually have to settle for the walk in
clinics and their "providers."

Pretty soon, you're only going to be left with the solids which won't
move. Next time, try shaking it.

I find it hard to believe there are no squeeze bottles available.

Nah, it doesn't make it any thicker or slower moving that I notice.
Shaking is too much work.

I used to keep my ketchup in the fridge but I just started leaving it
out all the time, on my eating table for easy access. I figure if
restaurants do it all the time and nobody dies I could do it too.

My mom never refrigerated ketchup, and the only consequence was a
crusty buildup at the top of the bottle. It was rather tasty,
actually. (Kids will eat anything.) I refrigerate it.

BTW I recently found a bottle of Heinz stuck above the chiller in the
small fridge I have in my home office. It had been on its side,
undisturbed, for years. (The expiration date was seven or eight years
before.) The ketchup had separated over time into red, clear and icky
yellow-green layers. I didn't open the bottle to see if it smelled; I
assume it did. I was just happy it didn't explode on its way to the
outside trash.

Yes, that is common. My parents ran a restaurant for years and the
mustard and ketchup set out on the tables without any refrigeration.
Only time they got removed was to take them to the back, wash them out
and then refill them. For myself I keep my mustard and ketchup in the
fridge but in my case they may be in their for months with my only
using them occasionally. While at the restaurant they tended to get
refilled every week or so.
