WMAQ channel 5 news (NBC O&O) aired an investigation into the theft of a
Chicago ambulance that paramedics left running, unlocked, on the street
as they went into a firehouse for a few minutes. The would-be thief came
upon it, circled it a few times, then simply entered the driver's seat
and drove off. This resulted in a highway chase and an arrest well
outside of the Chicago area, in Grundy county.

Tv news obtained security footage, FOIA'ed from the police, showing the
ambulance just sitting on the street, and then the theft.

The fire department told a bunch of lies about how it's necessary to
leave the ambulance running because of systems on board. Uh, no, this
problem was solved decades ago in refrigerated trucks. The power for
the transmission is separate from the batteries used to maintain
onboard systems, although those batteries do get recharged while the
vehicle is running.

Ambulances are targets of thieves because, you know, they are full of
hospital-grade drugs.

We learn near the bottom that the only charges were filed by the county
prosecutor where the arrest took place, so possession of a stolen
vehicle. They couldn't charge him with the initial crime.

Chicago police closed the case and did not refer it to the Cook County
prosecutor for charges.

This was a gift to the Chicago police. Another jurisdiction made the
arrest. They had extensive video surveillance. Basically, all some
detective had to do was type up a damn report and get the appropriate
felony charges approved.

A whistleblower, former Chicago police detective, won massive damages against
the city for retaliation against her for trying to expose a bad arrest,
given the video evidence that she obtained. Massive damages. $4.35
million.

These millions in damages are a racket by the burke bagpipers crew. The money gets split amongst various Patricks and Tonys.
