Hmm ... that article doesn't mention the full time frame, but I'm too
lazy to search for when they mentioned a 2.5 year duration.

They could go faster in an entirely natural way, by refusing to
repurchase anything the comes due, but they preferred a slower approach
capped at $95 billion reduction per month, repurchasing to make up the
difference when more than $95B mature in a given month.

The FED repurchases are made with money received from issuing new loans (treasuries). Rob Peter to pay Paul. It's a giant ponzi scheme, now supported by a hidden tax called high inflation.
