Heard on the radio that Germany is planning on rebooting
three nuke power plants they were going to shut down.

How long ago did you hear that? I've heard all kinds of seemingly
contradictory reports about how Germany was going to cope with the
reduced flow of Russian gas and oil.

One said that they had only two working nuclear plants left and that
they were going to suspend the decommissioning for the time being.
Another report said that all the nuclear plants were already
decommissioned and would be ridiculously expensive to recommission.
Another report said the Germans were going to start using COAL again.
And so on and so forth. The bloody journalists can't seem to get basic
information on this topic that is so vital to the Germans.

If it's really that easy, that'd seem to be a strong, albeit informal,
argument that those plants should never have been shut down.

I find that surprising and even unlikely given that they were able to do
an incredible about-face with military spending. Just DAYS after Putin
invaded, they reversed decades of military spending policy and "found"
100 billion euros over and above their existing military expenditures to
make up for decades of neglect.

The expenditure needed to revive mothballed nuclear plants must be
dramatically less than that, even if it is many millions. They're also
apparently building LNG (liquified natural gas) facilities at a
tremendous speed so that they can start importing LNG from countries
that export it. That can't be cheap either.

While governments DO tend to move at glacial speed at the best of times
- except for autocracies like China - they CAN go quicker when
incentivized. I think Germany is pretty highly incentivized right now.

If you were living in Germany, I think you'd consider it a VERY bad
thing if your government couldn't figure out where the energy to heat
your house or fuel your car was coming from. Germany is a democracy and
they have got to know that there would be an immense public backlash if
they just dithered about energy.
