It seems the earth is spinning a tiny bit faster at the moment: in
recent days, the earth made a complete rotation in 1.59 milliseconds
LESS than a full 24 hours!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2rUtp7g3ms

Naturally, this raised some eyebrows in the media who "investigated" in
its usual diligent and thorough way (I'm being REALLY sarcastic here)
and determined that some unnamed expert somewhere declared it *might* be
because of climate change. Or events below the earth's crust. Or
something. (A chyron that is never read during the story says this tiny
acceleration in the rotational speed is part of a presumably normal 50
year cycle.)

But hey, the objective is to worry people and to bolster the effort to
fight climate change so they are on track to do that job. Whether they
are sharing any truth with anyone is presumably irrelevant at this point.

Meanwhile, here are some articles on this matter from Wikipedia. First,
a more general article, then one more specific to the length of the day:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth%27s_rotation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_length_fluctuations

I can't see anything in these articles that actually suggests there is
any reason to be alarmed about the world rotating minutely faster or
slower than 24 hours since fluctuations in the rotational time are
routine rather than exceptional. The only real problem mentioned in the
original video arising from the tiny change in the day length was some
stock market apps that apparently assumed that all days were precisely
24 hours long. That seems like a problem that can be handled by making
more realistic assumptions in the development of the apps.
