That some people should read the article they're linking? A no vote on
the amendment leaves the law the way it is which allows abortion before
22 weeks. Voting FOR the amendment would have enabled even more
restrictions.

It's a right protected in the state constitution. The 2015 state law was
unconstitutional. Unless the state constitution were amended, the
legislature was stymied.

The Kansas constitution quotes from the Bill of Rights

All men are possessed of equal and inalienable natural rights,
among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

and incorpates the quote into the state constitution's Bill of Rights.

That was the basis for Kansas state courts to enjoin enforcement of
Kansas Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act of 2015.
The act prohibited abortion by dilation and evacuation but the law was
never enforced.

The case went back and forth to the state Supreme Court, which took its
time in issuing the eventual ruling.

Anti-abortion proponents were so incensed that they got the state
legislature to propose the constitutional amendment that abortion rights
would no longer be protected by the constitution. All this happened
before the opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization
(2022) overturned Roe v. Wade.

Knowing that Democrats tend to sit on their hands and not vote and
Republicans vote more often, the referendum on amending the constitution
was held at the off-year primary election. Republicans even lucked out
that few high profile primary races were being held on the Democratic
ballot.

What ended up happening on Tuesday was an unusually high number of
unaffiliated voters participated in the primary, even though they could
vote on the nonpartisan question to amend the state constitution only.

All that being said, the state has just four abortion clinics, one near
Wichita and the other three in the Kansas City metropolitan area. There
are no abortion clinics in the western or southern parts of the state
and in parts of the state, it's closer to travel into Colorado for
treatment.

It's quite a thing to be asked to vote on a referendum to take civil
rights away. Despite the referendum being held at a primary election, it
was possible to inspire unaffiliated voters to turn out to vote on the
question.

It also shows that paying attention to the shenanigans of your state
legislature and actually turning out to vote are the only ways one can
have a say in what's going on.

Yep. They had almost twice as many people voting as in the midterms of
2018, and about 2/3 of the number who voted in 2020. It was worth it.

all that important to voters. I think they're important enough to some

That's not fair. There is well-known exit polling and issues polling
that the Number One issues for voters are always pocketbook issues.
There is actual evidence to back that up.

Social issues are about other people and unless those promoting the
issue have personalized it for voters, it won't have that much to do
with the outcome of an election.

In this case, the outcome of the referendum was changed because
everybody could vote on it, but since the unaffiliated voters couldn't
participate in the Republican primary, choice voters had no ability to
counter anti-abortion voters in the Republican primary.

I'll bet not a single Republican opposing abortion failed to get
nominated.

Considering that this is the first election after redistricting, there
just aren't all that many toss-up seats. Political parties are experts
at using computer algorithms to avoid leaving election outcomes to
democracy and pick their voters for the district to ensure no surprises.

There's no way to control for population changes so districts can become
more competitive between redistricting, but there are no surprises for
the first election after redistricting.

This is why I am so proud of my 3 children - because while I know they
don't by and large vote for the same party as me, they DO vote and
have a clue about the issues.

I don't demand they agree with me, I DO demand they not be blind
sheep. (All three are now early 30s)

It sure as hell >IS< my business when I find that in the Canadian
(provincially) taxpayer funded medicare systems it's being paid for by
taxpayer dollars. Bottom line is our system is full of all sorts of
bloat paid for by Canadian taxpayers with key things like focusing on
medical staffing levels and burnout (big issue during the past two
years) at the primary care level even more so than in hospitals is
what's most needed.

Also in Canada there's a backlog in funding to clear the backlog of
approving medical certification for foreign trained doctors. When I
hear about foreign doctors immigrating and then driving cabs when so
many people can't get a GP (like my daughter) my blood boils.

H.G., you have gone off on a tangent. A Friend was referring to wide
spread criticisms of national Democrats during midterm election cycle of
making the issue voters care about the most -- how economic conditions
affect their lives -- secondary with way too much emphasis on abortion
rights as if that will turn out the vote.

The failure of the Kansas referendum to amend the state constitution
doesn't prove the case that the national Democrats weren't wrong. You
ended up with a unique situation because the referendum was held at a
PRIMARY election and unaffiliated voters who voted on the referendum
were unable to vote in the Republican primary. Lots of voters caring
about maintaining some abortion access didn't translate into lots of
anti-abortion candidates in the Republican primary not getting
nominated.
