ISTR that showing it in midweek up against Coronation Street was how the
BBC killed it off at the end of the 1980s. I know that many on here hate
the Sylvester McCoy era with a passion, but IMO there was a huge
improvement in the show in its final season before cancellation, with
Battlefield, The Curse of Fenric and Survival all being excellent.

(And then the BBC replaced it with The Tripods, based on John
Christopher's novels, only to cancel THAT after two series, just as it
had started to get really interesting. Grr!)

Scheduling Doctor Who against Coronation Street in hindsight seems an
odd thing to do, when most British homes at that time only had one
Television set and Coronation Street was the number one programme in
the ratings each week. So there definitely was an anti-Doctor Who
element within the BBC.

I'm not so sure about the McCoy era, there was some good stories badly
realised alright, but there was also some dodgy pantomime type stories
there too. The quality of the show had declined. As Executive Producer
JNT has to take some of the blame, it wasn't all Grade & Powell's
fault. I also think Sylvester McCoy was a bad fit for the role.

No no. The “real” 13th Doctor - assuming that we still count from the
Division-imposed soft reboot of the Doctor as the being who would age into
the character portrayed by William Hartnell, Richard Hurndall, David
Bradley and Stephen Noonan (calling him the “First” Doctor) is the
incarnation played by Matt Smith. Who Dave apparently thinks looks a lot
like the “real” 10th Doctor, as played by Christopher Eccleston. Not quite
as far a stretch as Tennant to Whittaker, but still likely having the same
self-gratification induced blindness issue.

The difference is, the people who didn't like Sylvester McCoy's Doctor
don't go on about "retconning the 7th Doctor" for years and years like
a broken record. Good or bad, everyone accepts that it was part of
Doctor Who.
