And even if they're arrested, our D.A. has a blanket declination on property
crime, so these guys know there's literally no consequence for doing this.

I thought it was still considered a crime if the amount stolen was over
$950. Why doesn't this count?

When is the recall election for Gascon? It's in September, right? Does
anyone think he has much chance of staying in? Who is likely to replace
him? (I'm assume a DA recall is like a governor recall where the the guy
who replaces him is the guy who got the most votes in the 2nd half of
the ballot.) In other words, is the likely replacement just as bad as
Gascon or is it someone who thinks crime is a bad thing?

Yes, it would be a felony under the state law, but Gascon refuses to prosecute
property crime under that law or any other. In his own words, "That's what
insurance is for, not the criminal justice system."

So the dollar threshold doesn't matter. In L.A., if it's a property crime, it
won't be prosecuted. Although I suspect if someone were to find Gascon's house
and take a baseball bat to his car, he'd fairly quickly find an exception to
his 'no property crime prosecution' policy. Guys like him always have
exceptions for themselves and their friends and family to the rules they
expect the rest of us to live under.

> When is the recall election for Gascon?

They submitted the 717,000 signatures. The county has until the end of August
to count them and certify them. The election probably won't make the November
ballot. It'll be a special election in December or January.

Several of the assistant DAs have expressed interest in running. They're all
guys that have been highly critical of Gascon and have led the charge on the
recall, so I don't think we'll get a Gascon clone.

How did that work out for Newsom, dipshit? Hey, at least you're not
talking insurrection, though, so that's progress. Baby steps!

The hugely unsuccessful effort in 2021 to recall Newsom (who won 62-38)
cost California taxpayers $200.2 million. They've got money to burn on
nonsense, I guess. I suggest the feds cut aid to the state by at least
that much.

That's interesting, I didn't think of the cost. Eunuch Derp is always
whining about such things in Cali, but perhaps this slipped his mind.
Or the Oath Keepers said he shouldn't talk about it.

Well, that at least is a big relief. Maybe you still have a chance of
getting some
law enforcement before much longer. Would a new DA be able to prosecute
the crimes that Gascon chose not to charge or are those decisions
irreversible?

Have there been any developments on reopening that new 6th Street bridge
after the hooligans got it closed just days after it was finished?

And since then we had a hugely *successful* recall of Gascon's clone and
protege: the San Francisco D.A. Chesa Boudin.

Polling indicates that if Gascon's recall qualifies for the ballot, he'll
overwhelmingly go down in flames (70% to 30%) just as Boudin did. The problem
will be getting past the gatekeepers in the registrar's office, who are
extremely partisan hacks and have torpedoed recall efforts in the past by
rejecting many valid signatures that should have been counted.

This happened in the Councilman Mike Bonin recall. Over 30% more signatures
were turned in than required by law but the registrar rejected so many of them
that the recall failed. An independent firm was hired by the citizen group to
audit the registrar's work and found they were rejecting tons of valid
signatures. A lawsuit was prepared but never filed because the councilman at
issue decided to resign on his own.

The law requires 550,000 signatures for Gascon's recall. 717,000 were
submitted. If the registrar's office pulls the same shenanigans they did last
time, we may be in for a much longer fight to remove this guy whose insane
policies are already responsible for the deaths of at least four people.

Well, if Gascon can go back years and reopen cases to let people *out* of
prison, a new D.A. could certainly revisit his decisions not to prosecute
people and file cases against them.

> Have there been any developments on reopening that new 6th Street bridge

I haven't been keeping up with that story. I don't know. Last I heard they
said they were going to close it permanently to traffic and make it a
pedestrian-only bridge. So we apparently spent a half a BILLION dollars and
are only going to get a sidewalk out of it. Sounds about right for L.A. But
the people here will keep voting for the same assholes over and over again, no
matter how much money they blow, no matter how blatantly corrupt they are, no
matter how negatively their laws and policies affect their lives. It's like
some kind of bizarre case of Stockholm Syndrome or something.

I hope you're right about that! Of course the people he declined to
charge and the ones he let out of prison will still have darn harm -
perhaps including murders? - that could have been avoided if Gascon
weren't a psychopath....

There has to be SOME way to reopen the bridge to cars, even if it means a
constant police presence until people realize they can't street race or
do burnouts on the bridge. Or do these politicians have no
imagination/resourcefulness at all?

They just don't care. What's a little more crime at this point? They
know they'll be reelected no matter what they do, so there's no
incentive to bother trying to solve anything or make the city better. We
sure don't to put anyone in jail. Hell, we're planning on closing all
the jails!

Eventually, you'd think the taxpayers would tire of pissing away huge
sums on projects where no one ever benefits, in this case the car
drivers who won't be able to use the expensive new bridge.

I think you and Rhino would make a cute couple.

The hell it is. I've had vandals letting off roman candles against my
living room window at 1 am (I'm fortunate my screens prevented the
glass breaking as I easily could have been an arson victim --- and I
can assure you I >didn't< call my insurance company at 1 am, I called
9-11.

Now to be sure I was EXTREMELY irate at the police response (they came
the next morning and gathered evidence in the form of roman candle
wrappers) and gave me a case number for insurance - by an extremely
rookie cop who clearly hadn't been on the job very long even though
when I called 9-11 the attack was still going and I specifically told
operator "Send a police car NOW and you can probably catch the bad
guys in the act!"

But no question my insurance company isn't going to be there for me at
1 am if and when I need help

Anybody know how much the Brits spent on that pedestrian bridge in
London near St Paul's cathedral? (I'm told you can ride a bike across
it too)
