Euthanasia, which was first legalized in 2016 (just a year after Justin
Trudeau was first elected), is being done more every year as more people
become eligible for it.

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/first-reading-canada-is-getting-real-comfortable-with-killing-its-disabled

The truly disturbing aspect of this is that hospital staff are dropping
hints to the ill that they should take advantage of euthanasia,
especially if keeping them alive is expensive and there are no family
members around to help care for them. Surely a moral society would do
absolutely NOTHING to push the sick in this direction and ONLY exercise
euthanasia at the PATIENT'S request and if all other options are ruled
out. Nudging - and maybe eventually pushing - the patient towards
euthanasia is appalling.

I read an article recently that said animals get better health care than
humans in Canadia because vets are allowed to accept payment for their
services but human doctors are not. As a result, Canadians pay half their
income in taxes, wait two years to see a specialist, and bleed for 18 hours
in an ER next to a dozen addicts looking for free drugs, and then rave
about how awesome it is that they have "free healthcare".

Most countries that have statist medical systems also have the option for
private care, so the desperate can get attention when they need it by
sacrificing less important spending. That's criminalized in Canada. Your
doctor could literally go to jail for getting paid to see you.

I once heard that Canada, North Korea, and Cuba are the only three
countries in the world where private healthcare is criminalized. Can anyone
confirm?

To be fair, as you point out above, the Canadian health care system is at
least very efficient and quick in providing people the euthanasia they
didn't ask for.

Since anyone can identify as anything in Canada these days and the country
has dozens of genders, surely humans can identify as pets and doctors can
identify as vets so they can have a real market in health care like
dignified Canadian animals?

I don't think your basic contention that doctors cannot receive payment
for services is true. For example, I have to get an annual medical to
prove that I am still medically fit to drive a school bus. By sheer good
luck, my family doctor does not charge for that and it was free for me
last year but this year, they were booked up when I needed to get my
exam so I went to one of several private clinics that did the exam and
completed the appropriate form in about half an hour. (I had to book the
appointment in advance but it was only a couple of days in advance.) I
had to pay just over $100 for it and I don't think I had to show my
government health card. My employer reimbursed me for this exam.

We also have an outfit called the Shouldice Clinic which is reputedly
THE place to get hernias handled. It is a private clinic but I *think*
the government still covers it although I'm not sure what the exact
arrangement is since I've never had a hernia. But Jack Layton, one of
our leading socialist leaders, had a hernia several years back and even
HE went to the Shouldice Clinic because they have such a stellar
reputation.

Despite these examples, the mere mention of the possibility of private
doctors and clinics fitting into our government system raises hackles
and will inevitably get loud criticism of even THINKING about it: this
is seen as the start of a slippery slope to getting rid of the
government system and replacing it with an all-private model, no matter
how little the private component is.

But the government system is hurting badly right now with nursing unions
screaming about burnout and nurses leaving the profession - although
paying them more money is apparently all we need to do to solve THAT
problem - and provincial politicians sounding alarms about needing the
feds to send more money to fix the tottering system. Talk about
privatizing some services is appearing at news sites but with the usual
howls of concern for the government system whenever it happens.

As for vets, virtually every one I have encountered seems incapable of
diagnosing ANYTHING without expensive tests. "It's possible her
such-and-such system is having trouble; the test to confirm that is
$250." is the sort of thing I seem to hear whenever I consult a vet.
However, while they are expensive, you can get the test and the test
result practically instantly while humans that need tests can wait
months or longer, even if it is ultimately free.

When the government health care system was originally setup in the 60s,
each type of doctor made separate decisions on whether to participate or
stay private. Veterinarians and dentists chose to stay private. But the
NDP (the party that is even more progressive than the Liberals) leader
agreed earlier this year to prop up the minority Liberal government
until 2025 in exchange for major steps towards expanding the government
health system. They are pushing hard for government-covered dental,
although it sounds like it's only going to be available for people 21 or
under, at least initially. It's too early to say just what the system
will be like in a few years from now.
