One of the most famous photographs of Winston Churchill, sometimes
called The Roaring Lion, has been stolen from its "home" in Ottawa.

While the thief was kind enough to leave a copy of the photo in the
place of the original, presumably to delay the discovery of the crime,
someone noticed the substitution and notified the hotel and police.

Although I am well aware of the photo - most people with any knowledge
of WWII should recognize it - I didn't know its origins. I had no idea
it was taken in Canada or how the photographer got Churchill to scowl
like that.

I knew the photo well and that it was taken by a Canadian photographer
(who was one of the great photographers) and remember the story of how
he got the grumpy look from Churchill. (Gave him a cigar, lit it then
snatched it from him after one puff and 'click!')

DIDN'T know the original had a signature and that that was how the
theft was spotted!

I like that one too. I remember reading that Hitler sometimes referred
to Churchill as a gangster but I don't know if that's because of this
photo or for some other reason.
