A couple of things: after the search of Mar-a-Lago, he has to be
indicted because otherwise it really would look like a political stunt.
Once indicted, he will be convicted because the whole world knows he's
guilty as sin. Ford pardoning Nixon was a partisan move, and the
Watergate stunt was stupid, but nowhere near as heinous as the espionage
Trump has committed. He should be put to death for what he did, not
pardoned.

Here's a thought:

The Espionage Act violations ARE NOT the most serious things Trump did.
It's his repeated violations of state law in various jurisdictions in New
York, both in Manhattan (New York County) and statewide with respect to
the fraudulent charity.

Fucking prosecutors in New York have been investigating Trump and his
businesses FOR DECADES. If any of this stuff had gone to trial on a
timely basis, he never would have been the Republican nominee for
president in 2016 and wouldn't have run to begin with.

New York prosecutors have been dragging their feet forever. We all
thought they were actually motivated to finish these investigations and
bring charges 'cuz the hypocrites gave so many press conferences.

It just never happens.

A president in future cannot pardon Trump for violations of state law.

Blame New York. I don't know what keeps him and his associated
businesses free of criminal indictments under state law, but the reason
isn't actual innocence.

I'm not thinking about what he deserves, a matter I leave to the
Almighty Inquisitor. Rather, I'm thinking of what outcome offers the
country its best chance of recovering a semblance of sanity. To that
end, I think undercutting Trump's martyrdom is more helpful than
wreaking vengeance.

Of course a prosecutor cannot bring an indictment supported by evidence
he lacks. You're right. But they have plenty of other evidence to
support different charges of wrong doing, and they've had this evidence
for two decades thanks to having been pointed in the correct direction
by investigative reporting.

There's no shortage of evidence of fraud and financial crimes.

I really don't want Trump to go to trial on Espionage Act violations.
Just because a dccument is classified doesn't mean it should never be
subject to sunshine and that the government isn't using classification
to cover up failure, embarassment, or even wrong doing.

I particularly don't want Trump to be martyred like poor Mr. Schenck.

It's fine to have a difference in opinion, but from where I'm sitting it
looks like you're putting two and two together and getting five. We're
supposed to have the finest legal system in history and if we don't show
proper accountability for these crimes we're going to look (even more)
absurd.

I think (however hopefully) that, for many of them, he'd have the smell
of tar even if not the black stickiness. And that it'd be contagious.

he would not have pardoned Nixon except with an admission of guilt for
what he was being pardoned for.

As it was even WITH the Nixon pardon Carter only beat him 51-49. No
question that pardon cost him the White House.

I saw a YouTube video the other day about a parliamentary inquiry into
Trudeau's invocation of the Emergencies Act to quash the Freedom Convoy
this winter and the reporter actually thought that the inquiry could
arrest Trudeau and put him in jail over his actions. Apparently, the
reporter didn't know the difference between a governmental inquiry and a
court proceeding. SMH, SMH....

As for it damning Ford, I might distinguish between the pardon itself
and the popular suspicion that it was a backroom deal.

Ford was trending upward as the election approached. In 1976, the
election was on November 2, as early as is possible. A few more days
might have made all the difference.

SMH? I know that usually means "Saint Michael's Hospital" (one of
Toronto's biggest hospitals) in the Greater Toronto area but what does
it mean in the context you mean?
