I don't know about the rest of you but it does seem like Hell has
frozen over. For a long time I had Comcast as my Internet (and
TV/Phone) provider. They were one of the first to put in hard monthly
bandwidth usages in the country. While much of the Comcast coverage
area went without a monthly bandwidth usage limit we here in the Deep
South had the *privilege* of having our usage limited for years. At
it's highest the limit was raised to 1.2TB per month which might seem
a lot until you either have a large family sharing that limit or get
heavy into streaming. Though Comcast was good at looking after their
customers as they had a plan that would allow you to get extra monthly
data usage for just $10/month more for I think it was an extra 50GB,
but if you spent $30/month you got something that they would imply was
unlimited bandwidth, though it never was as people who put up torrents
where they were constantly seeding at full bandwidth would quickly
find out.

That brings us to the Hell freezing over part of today. As Comcast is
now pushing a Supersonic package which includes gigabit Internet
service without a monthly usage cap. Yep, Comcast has finally seen the
light and has gotten rid of the monthly data usage cap. The cap that
even included usage from services that you got through Comcast like
Netflix. I am shocked by the turn around.

I had thought Comcast would get rid of the cap years ago when they did
their split with the country where the South had the cap and the rest
didn't (I think that was part of the Time Warner Roadrunner deal) but
when they started implementing the caps across the nation and
continued to defend them it felt like they would never change. Not
that I'm suddenly going to move back to Comcast but at least it's nice
to know that now I have two providers here that are going to charge
you more for having a heavy Internet usage one month.

Cox as for at least a couple of years let you buy unlimited bandwidth for
an extra $50 a month. I think if you get the top end package deal they even
stop throttling your uploads to 10% of your download speed. I love that
they insist they aren’t throttling. Apparently they don’t consider cutting
your speed to 10% throttling, only lessening your data usage. But they have
a cap on that as well.

At least with Comcast they never throttled your speed unless you had
used so much of their bandwidth that you were about to get a warning
and possibly be kicked off. You paid your extra $10-30/month and got
the same speed for that extra data usage as before.

I used to get warnings all the time until they raise the ceiling to a
terabyte or something ridiculous. And I’ve got a free coupon for my first
data cap overage. Of course now that I don’t have a computer and don’t
torrent anymore the only time I eat data is when I go to my friends Plex
account.

I do wonder though what counts against the data cap and what doesn’t. For
instance I can look at the Netflix or the prime through the DVR which I
think doesn’t count. But I could also watch those through the PS3 and I bet
that does count. But it’s all speculation.
