I knew this existed but I’ve never seen it before. TUBI asked me quite out
of the clear blue sky if I would like to see the “lost“ episode of
ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN!

It turned out to be “stamp day“ which is an oddity apparently written and
shot by the treasury department or something using the actors and sets from
the series. But not apparently the crew. It’s interesting for a true fan
because all the sets are shot from slightly different angles and you get to
see what’s actually behind the stockroom door when Clark goes through it.
He even does a scene as Superman without the padding!

Clark, Jimmy, Perry, and the worst Lois the series ever had all appear.
It’s basically trying to get kids to spend their hard grabbed pennies on
stamps instead of candy, stamps that one day they’ll be able to trade in
for savings bonds or something. And then buy portable typewriters with
them.

For completists.

Why does Superman need a stamp? Isn't he faster than the post office?

Stamp Day for Superman is a 1954 black-and-white short film starring George Reeves as Superman and Noel Neill as Lois Lane. It was produced by Superman Inc. for the United States Department of the Treasury to promote the purchase of U.S. Savings Bonds.

https://youtu.be/U9xv2GJ_m_0?t=160

United States Treasury securities, also called Treasuries or Treasurys, are government debt instruments issued by the United States Department of the Treasury to finance government spending as an alternative to taxation

I remember seeing it once but no longer remember where and I was under the
impression it was something they showed in government schools as part of a
junvenile "Buy war bonds!" campaign.

2-year Treasury yield tops 4% for first time since 2007
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FdMEk81WQAAQ8Cw?format=png&name=900x900

The inflation rate in 1954 was 0.75%.

How much was a $1 in 1954?

$1 in 1954 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $11.01 today

In 1954 when the flick was produced, we didn't even have our first TV.....

.... but we had relatively low inflation

They sure as hell never showed it to us. We occasionally got Jiminy
Cricket singing "I'm No Fool," and there were a few Disney nature
films. All prints were terrible.

They once showed us a film called Marcelino pan y vino, which was about
an orphaned kid who died in the arms of an animate Jesus statue.
Apparently the nuns loved this film. I saw it again many decades
later, and it really wasn't too bad.

Sometime between 1960 and 1966 (I remember the house we were living in at
the time) a bunch of the neighbor kids attended a marketing research thing
that we were scammed into by being told we were going to see an ADVENTURES
OF SUPERMAN episode.

They showed us the episode with the clown whose double fell off the
building. The clown who cried or something? 16mm in somebody’s living room.
The print had commercials in it. As soon as the commercials came on the
kids tuned out and started talking to each other and we were told we had to
watch the commercials And be quiet. Right then and there you knew the
market research was bogus because they were making us watch something we
wouldn’t have otherwise!

Then they took us in to separate rooms and asked us questions about the
commercials. Which we wouldn’t have known anything about if they hadn’t
made us watch them!

I remember not being able to recall what one of the ads was about, just
that it had a bird in it, and then a minute later I remembered what it was
for (Kenner toys maybe?) And got mad at the market research lady because
she wouldn’t write down that I remembered that.

What they actually wanted to know about was if we remembered the commercial
for Pillsbury funny face drinks. And it was dumb questions to be asking
maybe 10 year olds like if we remembered who the maker (Pillsbury) was. You
don’t ask your mom to get you Pillsbury funny face drinks. You ask your mom
to get you goofy grape!

Let me see when funny face came out… And when I say funny face it makes me
think of Ian and his Wikipedia article!

OK funny face started in 1964 so 64 or 65 would have been when we did this
and watched a 1954 adventures of superman show.

The things you remember 60 years later…

Speaking of which ... I remember that one of the flavors was named
Chinese Cherry. People objected, and they had to change it to
Choo-Choo Cherry. Oh, and Injun Orange, which was changed to Jolly Olly
Orange.

I remember them as all being awful, although the lemon-lime one
(Loudmouth Lime) was the least awful.

Fizzies, now. They were fruit-flavored Alka-Seltzer. They came like
six or a dozen to a flat pack, and you peeled each one out of a foil
wrapper. The first one or two were fine, but even just a day later the
rest of the tablets on the card would go flat, even if they were still
sealed.

You too? I always wondered why the later fizzies were flat.

And of course you could mix different flavors of fizzy to make something
completely undrinkable.

An Amazon search for fizzies returns all sorts of drink tablets full of
nutrients and Ick but none under the brand-name.

A search for funny face drink mix returns all sorts of merchandise with the
characters but no actual product.

Actress Hedy Lamarr invented ...

a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a
carbonated drink. The beverage was unsuccessful;
Lamarr herself said it tasted like Alka-Seltzer.

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedy_Lamarr#Inventor>

She's probably better known as an actress, but she also invented* a
radio guidance system and frequency-hopping, which these days is used
as the basis for things like wi-fi, GPS, and Bluetooth.

* "Invented" is a bit of an overstatement. Although she did come up
with the idea and patented it, she in relaity hired electrical engineer
Samuel Stuart Mackeown to actually make it work.

IIRC the stamp film was the last b&w "episode" shot for the series.

I remember seeing commercials for Funny Face drinks in the early 1970's.
I recall some had some weird names for the flavors "Chinaman Cherry",
"Injun Orange" and "Goofy Grape".

I believe these were later sold as pop-rocks, which were quite popular for
awhile.
