Need a ruling here. Those Web sites that strive for accuracy reporting
an actress's physical characteristics claim that Amanda Warren is 5'6".
She looked shorter, especially standing next to Jimmy Smits. The
character claimed to have been a street cop.

Copette or not quite short enough?

I looked at her credits. Nothing stands out as memorable but I think I
remember her from Three Billboards as a waitress.

I had to look it up. East New York is actually a far eastern
neighborhood in Brooklyn, not too far from the Acqueduct race track in
Queens.

Regina Heywood has just moved to a neighborhood she used to have some
relatives in. She's getting her nails done. Speaking of Mr. and Mrs.
North, suddenly a crime happens. There's a family of German tourists who
don't have an accent getting into a dollar cab (these things are absurdly
cheap and how the payoffs work made no sense). The panel door is yanked
open by a masked man pointing a gun. I thought the driver was setting up
the tourists to get kidnapped but the driver owed money.

The father is killed and a random security guard is killed. The driver
is hit. The driver is armed and tries to use the gun in self defense but
fails to shoot the gunman. Later in the show, cops threaten to arrest
him for violating gun laws, not having heard of New York State Rifle and
Pistol Association, Inc. v. Brue.

Turns out she's the new commander of the 74th precinct. Is deputy
inspector the right rank? That didn't make sense.

Suddenly the brass show up. Jimmy Smits I think is chief of all of
Brooklyn (that wasn't clear to me in dialogue), bucking for Frank
Reagan's job. There's a sleazy deputy mayor and a sleazier developer.

I'm watching with my mother. Heywood gives the speech at roll call -- Do
your job and I'll have your back. Go arrest violent crime and ignore all
the petty crap. My mother says she's heard this speech before. She's
right.

There's a Karen Valentine character played by Olivia Luccardi, actually
born in Brooklyn, that I recall from The Deuce. She got a major story
arc in season 3 as the popular and successful pr0n star so dissatisfied
with life and seeing no future for herself that she commits suicide. She
moves into a high-rise public housing project (the same apartment
complex often seen in Blue Bloods) and tries to make friends. Warren
yells as her for intimidating a teenage shithead who just vandalized her
door with graffiti. Of course she's got to get that kid to straighten
out.

Guarding the driver who was shot in the hospital, she records a
conversation between him and a friend. Isn't that a warrantless search
unconstitutional under the Fourth Amendment? Wouldn't a hospital bed be
treated as the patient's "house" for the duration of the admission?

It turns out there's a blue diamond smuggling story from Ivory Coast.
The actor playing the guy from Ivory Coast barely had an accent and it
was wrong for that part of Africa anyway. Also, Ivory Coast's mines
closed decades ago.

Also, the gemstones were CUT AND POLISHED, you know, the very reason to
smuggle them to New York. If they're already cut and polished they can
be sold anywhere.

There's a Russian loan shark pretending to be a construction foreman
working for the sleazy developer. The developer has something to do with
diamond smuggling to help finance his development.

Ruben Santiago-Hudson plays an elderly caring beat cop, and Richard Kind
plays an elderly majordomo to Warren.

C.S. Lee is the desk sergeant and roll call leader. Roll call had fewer
than a dozen cops.

The squad has two detectives. There's a cliched plot that cops know how
to run restaurants so they want to own one. The detective "buys" the
restaurant from the retiring owner with a stolen bat that's a valuable
antique that I'm sure is readily traceable.

Isn't that grand larceny? Aren't cops supposed to arrest people who
commit such a crime, not commit it themselves? He's supposed to be a
productive detective so I assume it'll be ignored.

It was less awful than I anticipated. Jimmy Smits was toned down. The
older actors were a bit entertaining. Lots of cliches but no P.C. crap.

East NY, until recently, was considered a super high crime area...

I might watch it a second time.

They’ve been making noises that they are setting up Jamie for the PC job. I
suppose this will make his horrible crazy rapidly ballooning wife first
lady. I bet she gets her own office and everything. The thing is Jamie‘s
only been on the job as long as the show has been on. I don’t think Frank’s
gonna live long enough to hand the reins directly to him which means
they’re going to need an interim.

Oh! Oh! I know what they’ll do. The final episode will have Jamie offered
whatever the job is right below police commissioner and Eddie Will be
offered meter maid on Coney Island or something and they’ll decide which
job they should go with with a coin flip. Because these are equal
opportunities.

What are you saying about JAG?

There's a sleazy deputy mayor and a sleazier developer.

They always are. They’re cut and polished when they dig them out of the
blood mines, and if they aren’t, they are completely cut and polished when
they come out of Superman‘s fist. What the hell does the inside of his hand
look like anyway?

(Snip detailed review)
We found this acceptable and worth another episode. A couple of things:
The opening gunfight scene was strange. What were the tourists doing in
a dumpy neighbourhood taking a sketchy cab/van? And the bad guy running
and shooting, able to kill a security guard with a single shot as he ran
past? Him holding up the cabbie in the first place, guns blazing? It
didn't ring true.

Richard Kind's schtick was amusing on Spin City. Here, it's already
tiresome. I had one of those old Chryslers (actually the Dodge Charger
version) back in the '70s. This would be the LAST vintage car I would be
seeking. They never show up at Barret-Jackson or any of the Mecum car
auctions because they are rust-prone junk!

Speaking of City Hall...why does every Deputy Mayor on every TV show
have to be some sleazy, connected, lever-pulling, favour-extracting,
slime ball?

The chick cop in the apartment is obviously going to lead to all manner
of conflict and subsequent clever, heart-warming solutions. We have seen
similar efforts to have cops live in the area they patrol included in LA
in SWAT. Seems unusual to me that the actress hasn't availed herself of
Invisalign.

But we'll give it another go next week.

You literally said that she tells the cops not to prosecute "small
crimes", and later criticizes someone for complaining about vandalism.
This is total soft-on-crime woke bullshit, Adam. It's all there in your
synopsis.

Ian, you're not listening.

The "petty crap" she told the beat cops to ignore was loosie cigarettes,
a very minor tax crime, and other crap that cops write up to keep their
arrest numbers high that do nothing for community safety. She did not
tell them to ignore property crimes.

The ignore vandalism of her front door thing wasn't P.C. either, just
wanted the cop who moved into the building to make friends with the
teenage boy because she decided that a cop living in the building was
"community policing". I said that was ridiculous, but not because it was
P.C. The boss was just wrong on how to handle the boy, who should have
been made to repair the vandalism.

an arrest for (allegedly) selling "loosie cigarettes" was
the pretext which led to the "officer involved homicide" [a]
in which Daniel Pantaleo killed Eric Garner. So yeah,
that's a loaded term in NYC...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Eric_Garner

[a] I'm riffing on the term "fficer involved shooting"
so beloved by members of the fourth estate [b]

[b] leading to this great "just don't do it" piece
in CJR:
