I'm confused here. I've been repeatedly and forcefully informed by
'progressives' that only white people can be racist. Now it seems that
hispanic/latino people can be racist, too, when it serves a political interest
for them to be. Maybe they can't be racist to white people but *can* be racist
to black people?

What are the rules here?!? We need a ruling from the Oppression Olympics
governing board, stat!

(One thing that's predictably glossed over here is that when these racist
comments were made, they were holding a resdistricting meeting and the only
non-governmental seat at that table was given to a union president. Why does
Big Labor-- a massive Democrat campaign donor-- get a direct say in
redistricting but no one else does?)

Of course when all is said and done, these racial offenders will be tacitly
pardoned and will suffer little in the way of professional harm for these
racist remarks, because they're otherwise good 'progressives' and work hard
daily to implement the Agenda at all levels. If a Republican or conservative
councilmember had said such things (if such a creature were even allowed to
exist, that is), half the city would be on fire right now.

Los Angeles City Council member Nury Martinez has resigned as the legislative
body's president after making racist remarks about a fellow council member and
his black child. "I take responsibility for what I said and there are no
excuses for those comments," Martinez said in a statement. "I'm so sorry."
Martinez' resignation as president is effective immediately, according to the
statement, though she remains a member of the council.

The remarks were part of leaked audio that was posted anonymously on Reddit
and obtained by The Los Angeles Times. According to the newspaper, the audio
details a conversation between Martinez, Councilmembers Gil Cedillo and Kevin
de León and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera.

Much of the conversation focused on maps proposed by the city's redistricting
commission and the councilmembers' frustration with them, as well as the need
to "ensure that heavily latino districts did not lose economic assets" in the
once-in-a-decade process, according to the Times. The councilmembers then
discussed Councilmember Mike Bonin, a white man. In clips of the leaked audio
posted by the Times, Martinez is heard recounting a conversation and says
"Bonin thinks he’s f**king black."

According to the Times, Martinez says Bonin appeared with his son on a float
in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade and he "handled his young black son as
though he were an accessory". The boy is 8 years old, according to a Facebook
post by his father.

The Times reported that Martinez also said of Bonin's child, "Parece
changuito," or "He's like a monkey." In the leaked audio, Martinez can be
heard speaking about Bonin's son allegedly misbehaving while at the parade by
hanging from a railing of their float, saying "this kid is going to tip us
over".

"They're raising him like a little white kid," Martinez said. "I was like,
this kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner and then I'll
bring him back."

The audio, according to The Times, was part of a conversation that took place
in October 2021. CNN has not been able to verify the audio recording. It
surfaced just weeks before the November 8 election that will decide the next
mayor of Los Angeles and several city council seats. It is unclear who
recorded the audio.

"The context of this conversation was concern over the redistricting process
and concern about the potential negative impact it might have on communities
of color. My work speaks for itself. I've worked hard to lead this city
through its most difficult time," Martinez said in a statement to CNN, made
before her resignation.

Bonin and his husband, Sean Arian, asked the City Council to remove Martinez
as council president and said she needs to resign from office. "We are
appalled, angry and absolutely disgusted that Nury Martinez attacked our son
with horrific racist slurs and talked about her desire to physically harm him.
It's vile, abhorrent, and utterly disgraceful," the couple said in a joint
statement.

Bonin and Arian added that they are "equally angry and disgusted by the ugly
racist comments about our son from Kevin de León and Ron Herrera, who should
also resign their posts, and by the tacit acceptance of those remarks from Gil
Cedillo."

The California/Hawaii State Conference of the NAACP and the Los Angeles Branch
of the organization are calling for the resignation of all council members
involved in that conversation and asking the city to investigate "how far the
racial animus has impacted hiring and other decisions of the City Council,"
they said in a joint statement. "We will not sit idly by and allow our elected
representatives to engage in these kinds of disgusting and racist behaviors,"
said Latricia Mitchell, president of the Los Angeles branch of the NAACP.

Council member Nithya Raman, who according to The Times was also referenced in
the leaked audio, released a statement to CNN Sunday also calling for
resignations. "Racist, homophobic, and deeply cruel statements like these are
disqualifying for elected office in L.A. The people who made them should
resign. If they don't, I'll vote to remove them from Council leadership at the
first opportunity."

In a statement Sunday, Cedillo called the comments about Bonin's son "simply
unacceptable".

"I want to start by apologizing. While I did not engage in the conversation in
question, I was present at times during this meeting last year," Cedillo said.
"It is my instinct to hold others accountable when they use derogatory or
racially divisive language. Clearly, I should have intervened. I failed in
holding others and myself to the highest standard. The hurtful and harmful
remarks made about my colleague's son were simply unacceptable. We choose
public life but our families should always be off limits and never part of the
political discourse."

Herrera has not responded to CNN's request for comment but the Los Angeles
County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO tweeted an apology from him to Bonin and
his family and to black and Oaxacan community members.

"There is no justification and no excuse for the vile remarks made in that
room. Period," the apology said. "And I didn't step up to stop them and I will
have to bear the burden of that cross moving forward."

De León released a statement to CNN Sunday saying, "On that day, I fell short
of the expectations we set for our leaders-- and I will hold myself to a
higher standard. There were comments made in the context of this meeting that
are wholly inappropriate; and I regret appearing to condone and even
contribute to certain insensitive comments made about a colleague and his
family in private. I've reached out to that colleague personally."

Despite the apologies, Bonin and Arian point to what they call a coordinated
effort to weaken black political representation in Los Angeles. "The
conversation revealed several layers of contempt for the people of Los Angeles
and a cynical, ugly desire to divide the city rather than serve it," Bonin and
Arian said in their statement.

In her statement announcing her resignation, Martinez apologized to Bonin and
his family. "As a mother, I know better and I am sorry. I am truly ashamed. I
know this is the result of my own actions. I'm sorry to your entire family for
putting you through this. As someone who believes deeply in the empowerment of
communities of color, I recognize my comments undercut that goal. Going
forward, reconciliation will be my priority."

Martinez represents the city's 6th district, which includes Hollywood,
Panorama City, and other parts of the San Fernando Valley.

argued on alt.tv.big-brother that this season's winner (who has said
repeated she would NEVER put a black woman "on the block") is racist

Bottom line is if you do your decisionmaking on the basis of race

Black Hispanics are the black or mixed-race descendents of slaves brought
to the Spanish-colonized Carribean islands. White Hispanics are descended
of Spanish and Portugese. I have no idea how Mestizos were supposed to
count themselves, or any handful of indigenous peoples.

Also, I don't recall broad census demographic categories making it easy
to categorize blacks from Carribean island colonized by the English and
French. I guess that was just black, then look for the national origin
question.

That's fine but incomplete. If you do not have a belief in racial
supremacy (how you would "prove" that is beyond me!) but believe in
racial separation, and carried out that belief in hiring, admission to
public events etc. most people would agree that that was racist.

According to the architects of South African apartheid they didn't
believe in superiority of one race over another but believed they were
better off apart but we know as practiced the truth was totally

which in the United States violates the civil right of equal protection

I believe there are a handful of pre-Columbian peoples in Central
and South Africa who were so isolated that they were never mixed with
Spanish and Portugese but can't be all that many.

tide, and whether it's a day ending in "y".

Right that's what I meant. The descendants of the Spanish and indegenous
peoples are Mestizo. Hispanic non-white woud be descendants of Spanish
and black peoples, chiefly in the Caribbean. S America doesn't have this
mix, Brazil is primarily descended from the Portugeuse and black.

By the way, I remembered where I saw this quite recently. It was less than
a month ago when I got the shot in my eye and had to fill in forms like

Creole? I dunno. Most of the Carribean was settled by the spanish until
the British kicked them out after they'd had many mixed descendants.
