I use Thunderbird as my newsreader and Eternal September as my Usenet source. I can't see ANY posts dated later than Oct 19. I've unsubscribed and resubscribed to no avail. I'm trying to figure out where the problem lies. I'm posting THIS message via Google Groups but I definitely don't want to use this interface a minute longer than necessary; without killfiles, this group is absolutely FULL of spam and almost unbearable.

connection? I'm using the default server connection on port 119.

I recently had similar problems with Giganews and I solved it by
changing ports.

Yeah, when I had problems with ES before, I changed ports from 553
(with SSL) to 119 (without it). That solved the problem. Then,
randomly, the 553 port started working again.

When I contacted the ES dude, he had no explanation for what was happening.

Everything seems to be working again via Thunderbird and Eternal
September. I started researching and found that other people had the
same problem and that a fix was predicted imminently. I restarted and
updated Tbird and, just like that, I'm seeing newer posts again,
including this thread.

What a relief! I really didn't like the idea of using Google News on an
ongoing basis!

I don't know why someone would wonder if usenet has been shut down when
they haven't been using it correctly in the first place. You might as
well wonder if usenet has been shut down because you can't read it on
your lawn mower.

Get a dedicated newsreader, Rhino. That will end your problems.

He was only posting through GG because he couldn't get through on a
newsserver with his newreader. The problem at E-S has been fixed.

No it won't, the only thing that would end his problems would be if he

Read the recent thread in eternal-september.support. The News server
was never down. The process and host required for certifying the user's
credentials were down. A few people created new accounts to bypass the
issue. I just waited till Ray fixed the problem.

Good grief. You have to check "Always Authenticate", Johnston. I don't
use Thunderbird as a newsreader, but plenty of other Usenet users do who
are subscribed to eternal-september.
