This is just an experiment to see if this appears in my own copy of Tbird.

Fwiw, my TBird screwup now seems to be that the first Usenet-post I send
(after, say, an hour's interval) gets lost ...i.e., though it appears in
my 'sent' folder, it doesn't reach Usenet and must be re-sent.

That happened to me too, at first, but then Thunderbird got worse
behavior of pretending to load posts when it wasn't or not letting
me see the complete newsgroups list.

I've been having nothing but problems with Thunderbird myself and it's
only gotten worse over the past several days.

Since I upgraded to the latest version it has been refusing to send
posts. I often have to save for later to get it to send. Then on
Saturday it suddenly demanded that I enter a username and password in
order to post.

That wasn't a newsreader issue. The problem was on Ray's end. The
process and host used to authenticate credentials of existing users
failed and it took Ray a few hours to fix it. I just waited that day
till Ray fixed the problem.

That was the server, not Tbird.

Thanks Adam and Suzeeq for clearing that up. I wasn't home most of the
day, but while I was out I headed to the eternal-september website to
see if there was an outage. I didn't see any issues there. Then later
that evening when I came home I was still having the same problem so I
assumed the issue was with Thunderbird.

I use Thunderbird and Eternal September and haven't noticed any problems

My Thunderbird is still messed up. Twice now it has looked like it was working again but it only works for the first refresh or two, then stops finding newer posts. This is maddening, especially since it's now harder to report these issues and get them worked on by the developers. I finally found the official way of reporting Mozilla issues so maybe my report there will get things fixed - eventually.

This is nice, my newsreader ignores your follow-up to alt.test

Last I used alt.test it was clogged with an accelerating robo
spam making it hard to use. Actually any *.test newsgroup is
supposed to work in giving you an emailed response.

The rec.test newsgroupo hasn't worked for many years.
