An isolated company town somewhere in California that emulates an
idealized vision of the '50s is the setting for this story. There's
phenomenal amounts of drinking, every night one of the employees or the
boss Frank (Chris Pine) host a cocktail party. All homes are furnished
with items from the company story and fresh food appears out of nowhere.

At the center of the story is Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry
Styles). Both actors are English but Styles doesn't do accents. Jack is
seemingly straight-laced and working on a secret project at work he
can't tell anybody about. In real life, Styles had been a rock star in a
boy band. He also wrote the odd little song Alice can't help but hum
throughout the movie.

The women cannot leave the subdivision themselves, and there's a bus to
take them shopping. Under no circumstances are they to go into the
desert and they must not go to Headquarters.

Frank's wife is Shelley (Gemma Chan), who commands the respect of the
other wives and helps to keep them calm.

Her neighbor Margaret (KiKi Layne) thinks something is wrong and has
lost her son after taking him into the desert. Everyone else thinks the
boy is dead but Margaret thinks her son was taken from her as
punishment.

Bunny (Olivia Wilde, who also directs) seems to understand more than she
says but largely sticks to gossip.

There's a sinister Dr. Collins (Timothy Simons), Frank's oldest
associate, who helps to keep the wives in line.

The wives all seem to have similar memories.

It's nothing we haven't seen before, but I've always gotten a kick out
of Florence Pugh. I thought she carried The Little Drummer Girl. As
she's from the UK, she looks more like a real person and hasn't starved
herself down to lose the last few pounds.

The new movie on HBO this week, which hasn't acquired a new title each
week for a long time.

I saw it in the theater in October, I had the chance to rewatch it along
with the 48 or so other movies I watched during the recent 10-day HBO
free preview but I wasn't even motivated.

I'm supposed to get a free Showtime preview from Dec. 9-12, their new
George (Jones) & Tammy (Wynette) biopic series with Jessica Chastain and
Michael Shannon is supposed to be pretty good. Unfortunately I'll only
get to see two or three at most of the six-part series before the
preview expires.

Jones (my late father's favorite country star BTW) was a real character,
I can remember the local news over in Nashville covering his personal
exploits like the time Tammy fed up with his boozing took his car keys
and he rode a lawn mower to a local bar.

The movie is a variation of The Stepford Wives.
