If you were a fan of James Garner, then you knew who Stuart Margolin
was. Similarly, if you were a fan of Jack Klugman, you knew who Garry
Walberg was. As A Friend recalled in the obits newsgroup, Margolin was in the
ensemble cast of Love American Style for the first 4 seasons, plus he
did the more risque blackout segments that I wouldn't have seen in second run
syndication.

In Garner's "as told to" professional biography, written at the end of
his life, he cast Margolin on Nichols because one of the bits Margolin
did on Love American Style made him laugh.

I am shocked that A Friend has never seen The Rockford Files.

Just in the adaptation of Friday the Rabbi Slept Late. In the four episode
tw series that followed, David Small was recast as Bruce Solomon.

I've never seen these in second run. I do recall watching these in the
'70s.

Producer Leonard Stern said the series was supposed to have been
focused on the character of Rabbi Small, but network sensitivity
about a rabbi as a lead series character led to more emphasis on
Art Carney's Chief Lanigan. Stern recalled that at one point the
network even asked him to make the rabbi "less Jewish".

I loved Nichols, though.

There was a long span in my life where I was either in night school or
working nights. I missed a lot of TV. There are wildly popular shows
I've never seen. (The Cosby Show is one of them. I'm not big on
reruns.)

I have seen THE ROCKFORD FILES and couldn't put a face to the name,
Stuart Margolin. Now if you had said Angel from TRF had died then I
would have known immediately who you were talking about as I knew the
character name but not the actor's real name.
