Too Jewish
-- Mel Brooks

Now, you'd think somebody would have released Lanigan's Rabbi as one box
set, but no, that wasn't done. I suppose ownership rights are different.

The pilot episode adapted from Friday the Rabbi Slept Late starring
Stuart Margolin as Rabbi David Small is available separately from a
different seller than the four-episode series that as aired during NBC
Sunday Mystery Movie collective series starring Bruce Solomon. Art
Carney played Lanigan in both, and Janet Margolin was retained as the
rabbi's wife, ignoring that her husband was recast.

modcinema for one, DVD Planet Store for the other

I'll further guess I won't get the NBC Mystery Movie titles on the
Solomon series.

Sounds like somebody got a get.

Tried to get this in a torrent and couldn't find it, it must be bad, cause pirates don't even want it.

Hey Kerman, why don't you just re-watch the Coen Brothers Film, "A Serious Man"? There are 3, count them, THREE rabbis there!

And readily available on torrents, without the need to visit the local library or JCC.

In the Rabbi David Small series of mystery novels by Harry Kemelman, the
congregation was in Barnard's Crossing (fictional), a Boston suburb. In
the first novel Friday the Rabbi Slept Late, the rabbi was a murder
suspect, not that the police took it too seriously. Hugh Lanigan was the
chief of police investigating the murder. As Lanigan was Catholic,
Kemelman used it as a device to include comparitive religion discussion.

But the police chief was a secondary character. On television, the role
was beefed up because NBC didn't want the character of the rabbi to be
the lead character in his own fucking tv series. Leonard B. Stern,
producer, had purchased adaptation rights to the first novel. He got a
note from the network to make the rabbi less Jewish.

Now the novel was a best seller which should have been a hint that there
was an actual audience for a mystery with a bit of religion tossed in.

I know. You are shockeed SHOCKED that there was a network note.

The four-episode Bruce Solomon tv series, part of NBC Sunday Mystery Movie,
was all original scripts; Stern didn't buy rights to the other novels.

A serious answer to a serious question you didn't know to ask about 'A Serious Man':

The Coen Brothers film is full of Jewish Easter Eggs. If you aren't smiling already, check your pulse.

At the Jolly Rogers Motel when Arthur and Larry are commiserating, Arthur sits by the pool cursing god, and behind his torso is a message from the creator.

During the first visit by Larry to find answers from a rabbi, the young sage looks out the window and spouts platitudes about the gawd-damn parking lot. All the while the calendar on the rabbi's wall tells a story.

This is a great film that Kerman hates. You have to wonder why. Another question for another time.

So consumed by superstitious beliefs, the whole community fails to find somebody to love.

Maybe that's the answer.

One more, because I can't help myself.

Keeping in mind the young rabbi's calendar, at one point in the film, Danny's father Larry becomes offended by his neighbor's encroachment of his property rights by simply mowing the lawn. Later in a dream sequence, Larry envisions this neighbor trying to kill him. Toward the end of the film at the bar mitzvah scene, the middle rabbi of the 3 featured in the film, welcomes Danny into the community that holds sacred a Jewish state formed from stolen property rights.

"A Serious Man": A marvelous film that deserves multiple viewings!!

Judaism had become an exoteric concern. The normative Jewish mysticism fell by the wayside. We built buildings. We built Israel. We showed the world that we were still here.

Israel became the surrogate for Jewish spirituality.

The film is replete with examples: Rabbi Scott had a map of Israel on his wall and a pushke (tzedakah box) on his desk, Rabbi Marshak had a photo of Golda Meir on his mantle, and Larry had coffee-table books about Abba Eban and Masada.

Rabbi Dan Sklar, who consulted on the film, was quoted in The New York Times,

“It’s the most Jewish movie I’ve ever seen. ... You leave the theater with a host of questions, no easy answers and, frankly, arguing about what it all means.”
