Yesterday I finished off season #5 of "The Crown", which means I now
need to get on "Wednesday" and "Emily in Paris" before I pull the plug
on Netflix at the end of the month!

The Crown (Netflix) - "Couple 31" and "Decommission" (ep's #5.9 & 5.10,
the season finale).
This is the first time I can recall "The Crown" not ending with a
"proper" season finale - but this season ends not with a "cliffhanger",
just with all the balls in mid-air, as if there should be immediate
follow-up episodes - instead, we have to wait for season #6. >:/
"Couple 31", about Charles' and Diana's divorce, comes *close* to
redeeming the season, but it's just not enough. Still, this is a good
episode, and I didn't even mind the "aside" bits with the other
divorcing couples (the second couple, about the working class couple
divorcing because the husband works too much was especially
heart-breaking). In this one, the Queen tasks John Major with mediating
the divorce. Meanwhile, Camilla is put in touch with a "spin doctor"
who then advises Charles to get the divorce over as quickly as
possible, which goes against Charles' initial instinct to battle Diana
to the hilt. Eventually, the two almost come to a post-divorce
understanding.
While I haven't cared much for this season, I have mostly liked its
portrayal of PM John Major (Johnny Lee Miller). Peter Morgan seems to
have a weird affection for Major (is Morgan a Tory?!) - I've got to say
that the portrayal of Major is the most positive and sympathetic of any
of the PM's the show has covered - this is especially obvious in
"Couple 31", and "Decommission" which covers Major's blowout loss to
Tony Blair in 1997. The rest of this finale is a weird mix of Dodi
Fayed (who is not even with Diana at this point, and is instead
cavorting around with a model played by "Gotham's" Erin Richards!), and
the decomissioning of Britannia, Elizabeth's beloved royal yatch.

soaps: DOOL - Wed's & Thur's ep's. Not much happened in these, except
that Brady told Chloe what Kristen had done to them - but it doesn't
make any difference: Chloe has fallen for Stefan and doesn't want to
get back together with Brady - and Stefan admitting to Gabi that he has
been brainwashed - which again, isn't making any difference as Stefan
doesn't feel any attraction to Gabi. Meanwhile, Rolf has fled his lab
and is still beyond Rafe's reach. Brady kicks Kristen out, and she
blackmails EJ so she can stay in the DiMera mansion. They've actually
*creamted* Kate, so I have no idea how she's coming back from that!!
Stefanie has apparently figured out that Alex turned off her phone -
will be interesting to see if he cops to it, or lies about it.
GH - Thur's ep. This ep was a "holding pattern", but Carly is about
to tell Nina, and Drew is about to tell Michael, that Nina is stupid
Willow's real "mommy"! Lil' Lizzie gets son Cameron to admit that that
bitch Josslyn dumped him - they're both far too sympathetic to her!

Elvis (HBO Max) - Considering this is Baz Luhrmann, whose films I
usually despise, this was pretty good! (if definitely *over-directed*
and too "busy"!) - I guess even Luhrmann can't screw up the story of
Elvis, though this is sort of told from the perspective of the
"villain" of the piece: the psychopathic conman "Colonel Tom Parker" (a
generally unrecognizable Tom Hanks!). Also glad to see Olivia DeJonge
is still working (she plays Priscilla). Anyway, Austin Butler s
amazingly good in this, and a lot of the (recreated) Elvis performances
are barnburners.
Unfortunately, Luhrmann seems to take liberties here, like the whole
sequence where Elvis is arrested after giving a concert, and "forced to
enlist", which seems to be entirely made up out of whole cloth. The
film also eliminates Elvis' latter-day girlfriends.
OTOH, the part about the 1968 TV special, looks mostly legit and
accurate, and may be the best part of the film.

Sidenote: The horror flick "Sick" premieres tonight on the Peacock!!

"Who would ever do this to him!?" - HottCiara on DOOL (04-27-2020), asking
who would stab Victor Kirakis... How about ANYONE WHO'S EVER MET HIM??!!

That's pretty much my take on Baz and the movie.

I have "Sick" on my watch list but I'm not sure when I'm going to get to it.

This will be a two day catch-up. I watched:

Love, Death & Robots (Netflix streaming) I finished the season. I'm not
going to try and recap all the episodes. It was a mixed bag. There
really weren't any stand out or particularly memorable episodes.
Although some were certainly good. And the animation was generally very
good and often photo realistic.

Willow (Disney+)

Mayfair Witches - "The Witching Hour" - Alexandra Daddario's new
supernatural series based on the books from Anne Rice. It is apparently
set in the same universe as the Interview with the Vampire series, so
expect crossovers!

Law & Order - "Second Chance" - Rich kid gets high on pot and stomps a
man to death. Because the pot.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit - "Soldier Up" - Continuation of the
ongoing plotline involving Benson trying to take down a gang leader who
put a hit on her.

Law & Order: Organized Crime - "The Infiltration Game" - The first two
seasons they had one big bad the whole season. Actually the big bad
from season one returned for season two. This season they seem to be
all over the place! Anyway this week they take down Master Bra'tac.

Plane (theatrical) The latest Gerad Butler action flick! If you've seen
the trailers it depicts Butler as an airplane captain who crash lands in
the jungle where the passengers are taken hostage by terrorist. He then
has to team up with Mike Colter who plays a convict being transported on
the plane when it goes down. The trailers are slightly misleading. For
almost the first half of the movie its pretty much a standard drama
dealing with the plan crash. Then when it switches to action movie mode
it's not just Butler and Colter. The movie also focuses on the
airline's response which includes bringing in an expert played by Tony
Goldwyn to handle getting the passengers safely back. He hires a team
of mercs (think the Expendables) to go in and get them. So the movie
isn't just Butler and Colter killing bad guys left and right, it's
Butler, Colter, and essentially The Expendables killing bad guys left
and right! So is the movie good? It's Gerad Butler, Mike Colter, and a
team of highly skilled mercs using ridiculously overpowered guns
slaughtering terrorists like there's no tomorrow. Of course it's good!
Just don't expect any award nominations...

I watched only the latter.

The only reason I watchED the latter.

So is this Diana supposed to be evil or insane or on drugs or some
combination of the three?

Apparently Lisa Marie disagrees.

What did I watch?

Still mostly TCM in the background. A couple of MOTIVE episodes starting
season two with a small change in cast.

KIM (1951) on TCM as part of the Errol Flynn marathon. Also starring Paul
Lukas from 20,000 leagues under the sea. And of course Al Calavicci as Kim
with the green hair.

Recorded for later

THE FRENCH CONNECTION (which I’ve never seen)

DIRTY MARY, CRAZY LARRY (which I actually saw in the theater) where Lynn
Borden from the later episodes of HAZEL gets interrupted in the shower!

I read that she saw it a few days before she died and liked it.

I'm not sure if I've ever watched an Errol Flynn movie or not. I was on
the fence about recording Robin Hood, but decided not to.

Did you like it?

I've seen it once maybe twice before. I'll be revisiting it soon along
with the sequel(s) as part of a Gene Hackman marathon leading into the
Christopher Reeve Superman movies.

She was in the audience for the Golden Globes.

When Austin Butler won his award he thanked Denzel Washington. I was
wondering what did Denzel have to do with the Elvis movie so I looked it
up thinking maybe he was a producer. Apparently it was Denzel who
convinced Baz Lurhrmann to hire Butler. Now I'm curious how do they
know each other. They don't appear to have done any movies together.
But he does seem to get around. After Chadwick Boseman's death it was
revealed that he helped pay for his education. I guess he likes helping
and mentoring up and coming actors behind the scenes.

Hah!

I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid. I really should track it
down again. Unsourced IMDb trivia sez Errol Flynn got screwed over by the
studio. He thought he was going to shoot on location in India and turned
down starring in King Solomon's Mines. Instead, he was shot in studio and
matched with long shots of his double on location by the second unit. On
a movie production like that, it sounds like second unit would have been
more fun than first unit.

Don't you need to be high to properly experience this movie?

If you are going to do an Errol Flynn marathon, then do yourself a favor
and start with Captain Blood, his first pairing with Olivia de
Havilland. This movie is just pure entertainment with lots more to come
from the two of them.

Ouch!

If you’re going to watch one Errol Flynn movie, it should be THE ADVENTURES
OF ROBIN HOOD. it’s the definitive Robin Hood movie. You’ll think you’ve
seen it before because so many other films have a homage to it.

And you know what it would pair well with? THE ROCKETEER.

I can’t imagine anyone but Stewart Granger in King Solomon‘s mines.

Errol Flynn did seem to spend a lot of time in front of a back projection
screen and with some rather embarrassing blue screen work as well.

Lol
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie high except may be from secondhand
smoke

I still want to see the European cut of straw dogs. less graphic violence,
more nudity. Sort of a Jill Wagner cut.

Or you could pair it with movies like THE SEVEN-UPS for some great car
chase scenes.

Already part of the marathon...That's why I said sequel(s). :-)

I don't think I've seen The Seven-Ups before. Sounds like it's
something to look forward to.
