The U.S. spent 20 years and bazillions of dollars implementing regime change
in Afghanistan and it was totally effective, in so far the government at least was
subservient to us.

Problem is, we did almost nothing to implement _cultural_ change.

We allowed Afghan children to continue to be educated madrasas (Islamic schools)
instead of treating Afghanistan like we did Japan after WWII and forcibly turning them
into quasi-Americans, the result being that the population of Afghanistan immediately
returned to the old ways the moment we left.

If we weren't willing to do that, we should have never gotten involved.
