Every time I think about Columbus, Georgia,

Louis also knew how a brother felt when his brother died:

(p. 31) - " 'Somebody did. Shot right through my hat, too.' [Will] said. '[Brother Dave] would have to be wearin' my hat.' "

To each it is given to die proudly, to die well, and this is, indeed, the final measure of the man.”

Very good! We have "Hondo" on the nightstand to read after we finish "The Quick and the Dead." "Hondo" and some others we have read (or are going to read) are on the list of "Best Western Novels" (not the hotel chain). The manliness secrets will be revealed.

I do my reading on the bus... which is also where I usually catch some sleep. Lately, I've only been sleeping.

One of the main themes in the Western novel is what a real man should be. A real man supports and protects his family. He is honest and does not lie. He helps and is loyal to his friends. He works hard at farming/ranching/store keeping to provide a good life for his family. He is God-fearing.

Of course it existed. The male movie stars of Classic Hollywood exemplified this art -- and not just in westerns.

As Archie Bunker sang: "Goils were goils and men were men."

The ideal man was self-reliant, self-confident, physically fit, able to take care of himself in a fight -- and ready to protect those who can't, soft-spoken, calm in the face of adversity, not out to intimidate or control others, reliable, of sound moral character, and has his own unspoken ethical code that he'll stick to -- even to the detriment of his personal life.

The hippie generation of 1960s destroyed the art of manliness -- quite possibly forever.

That's an art? I call that a creed, a code of conduct, an honor code. Arete!!

Ahem, mebbe I don't have the soft spoken down very well. Although I keep my tone low 'cause when I raise my voice, people start lookin' worried like I'm gonna start hurtin' them. You can say I'm blessed with a voice that commands attention-- one of the reasons they wanted me as drill sergeant, obviously.

Yes, that's an art. Arete is something men acquire -- not something that they're born with.

It is not considered manly to shout overblown, melodramatic, hysterical outpourings in a discussion (or, for that matter, under any circumstances). I haven't met you, or even seen a photograph of you, but I doubt that anyone has ever called you manly.

The man you describe is "The Loner," who rides into town/up the road/into camp. He has a mysterious background, but his name is known and feared. He is rumored to be the best and quickest shot. He is a man who doesn't say much, but observes and is always aware of his surroundings. He is not young but not old either. He is respectful to women. He takes the side of the underdog, although he would rather ride on. Children are in awe of him. He doesn't stay long--only long enough to set things right. "There's no going back from a killing, Bob." (Shane)

Yes. Shane is the archetypal hero -- or, rather, he is a man fulfilling the role of the same. Shane could have just as easily been a knight of the Round Table as a gunslinger errant. Both the book and the motion picture distill the western myth into its purest form. Wilson, Shane's nemesis, possesses many of the same manly qualities, but these have become twisted and perverted into greed, self-centeredness and sadism. Joe Starrett is manly (and an honest, loyal, hardworking, God-fearing family man), but he lacks the "artistry" of Shane (both with a gun, and in terms of personal style). Joe is roughhewn, sturdy but rather dull. He lacks the air of mystery that Shane has -- compared to knight errant Shane, Starrett is a lowly peasant. It's no wonder that Starrett's wife and son are drawn to Shane -- and that a part of them wishes that Shane might replace Starrett as the head of their family.

I do my reading while driving. Really annoys people, especially in the left lane.

That sounds perfectly wonderful. I would only be able to read a page a night
before falling asleep. It would take me a year or more to read a Michener novel.
