Governor Hair-Gel just signed SB-960. It removes the legal requirement that
police, highway patrol, and corrections officers be U.S. citizens or permanent
residents.

Now illegal aliens have the legal authority to arrest United States citizens
in California.

From the bill: "The bill would remove the provision that requires peace
officers to either be a citizen of the United States or be a permanent
resident who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship, and would
instead require peace officers be legally authorized to work in the
United States, and make conforming changes." AFAIK illegal aliens are
never legally authorized to work in the U.S.

They are in California. In fact, you can face legal repercussions here for
refusing to hire someone because they're an illegal alien.

Wait a second, I thought we were disbanding/defunding the police?

Or does that only apply to cops who are legal American citizens?

That's a citation of federal law, not state, city and/or county laws.

Yes, it's a federal law, which, per that website, applies in CA.

That sounds like the DOJ has a selective hands-off policy regarding CA.

Plus the requirement to be trained and hired as a peace officer is still
there....

There are aliens legally authorized to work who are not permanent
residents. As they have not immigrated, why the hell would the
legislature want any of them trained as police officers since they are
returning to their home countries?

The benefit to the public isn't clear to me, given the necessary
training required.
