Murders and violent crime have been peaking of late. The major rise
began in 2018 (end of Rahm's term but I'm sure not-Irish Mike blames
Lightfoot for that) and rose massive while schools were shut down as the
pandemic response. Lightfoot DID NOT want the schools shut down. That
was ordered by Gov. Pritzker.

The murder and violent crime rate was even higher in the early 1970s.
Richard J. Daley was mayor. He had been mayor since 1955 and was still
serving as mayor at his death in 1976. The Daleys are an Irish-ethic

city-wide and county-wide offices. The state's attorney (county prosecutor)
was Hispanic and female. She was blamed in part for allowing Rahm to sweep
the murder of Laquan McDonald by police officer Jason Van Dyke under the
rug, because it would have hurt Rahm's re-election chances in 2015. She
really wasn't the primary person at fault but it made her an easy
target.

When the scandal was finally made public thanks to an intrepid reporter
pursuing freedom of information requests to obtain all the video
evidence created by police, Rahm was not able to run for a third term of
office.

Lightfoot had been appointed by Rahm to the Police Board (which at the
time reviewed police officer discipline matters) and then repeatedly
criticized him for police discipline failures generally.

In the mayoral election February 26, 2019, Lightfoot got 1 out of 6
votes. But because Chicago elections are a top-two runoff if no one
receives a majority, this was adequate to make it to the second round.
Then her opponent simply lost the will to continue running for office in
the second round. Lightfoot was elected April 2, 2019.
