Robert Reich
@RBReich
·
Total student loan debt erased by Biden plan: $400 billion

Total cost of the 2017 GOP tax cuts: $1.9 trillion

Funny how Republicans have no problem giving corporations and
billionaires big tax cuts, but erasing some student loan debt for
millions of people is just too much.

Yeah, that tracks.

Republicans Are Working on Making 70 the New Social Security Retirement Age
Republicans claim they don’t want to cut Social Security — but they’re working behind the scenes to do just that.

Assuming that this SS move, like all political moves, is in somebody's
evil self-interest, what's motivating the Republicans?

What's motivating the Republicans?

50 million aging baby boomers drawing on the social security trust fund, living longer, and surviving the black death, otherwise known as Covid-19. And Repubs want to cut the benefits (raise the age) in a way that doesn't appear to be a cut in benefits, so when it comes time to vote, they can still win. Don't piss off a voting boomer!

It's a tricky situation in all honesty. As recession kicks in and layoffs begin, tax receipts from payrolls will fall off as will deposits into the SS trust fund.

Adding to this pending nightmare, foreign entities are NOT buying US government debt (treasuries aka IOUs) which will further cramp deficit spending already at the debt ceiling.

Simply put, there isn't enough money. And the USG has been aware of this for DECADES, didn't plan accordingly, and spent SO MUCH MONEY on foreign interventions and invasions, that could have been better invested.

But that is crying over spilt milk. Honestly I don't know an answer short of another really good pandemic that kills off a lot more baby-boomers.

I'm preparing for the worse, with massive daily doses of natural vitamins, with MASSIVE doses of B-12 and a fasting- weight loss program of my making. I go to bed at night hungry and dream of cheese and steak and pizza and a vege salad bowl as big as a hub-cap, LOL

Of course I'm kidding about another black death, but am serious about staying healthy. My plan has been to outlive the Social Security Trust Fund. Unfortunately, I get closer to that goal every day.

To keep from having to move to the alternative of lifting the cap on
SS taxes on income. Currently it's at $160,200 so any income above
that doesn't get taxed. Remove that limit and Social Security remains
solvent for the foreseeable future or so goes the story.

So it's a choice of making all workers pay by working more years (who
haven't saved enough to retire before 70) or making those who make
above the $160K income pay more into the Social Security fund.
Guess who the Republicans tend to side with.

That's so true, and the billionaires "worked" for the tax cuts by buying
corrupt right wing politicians. Very on-point.

A few evenings ago CBS had a story about some retiree who said he had
$850K saved and claimed that was the "average amount retirees had saved."

It would take me into the next lifetime before I burned through $850K
but I guess YMMV.

That retiree is senile.

I've done good in this world. Now I'm tired and just want to be a cranky
