When I was in San Francisco last summer, I visited Golden Gate Park. They're
in the process of replacing the main suspension cables on the bridge and you
could sign up to buy a segment of the old cable as a souvenir. I did and mine
arrived yesterday. They did it up nice. (And given how heavy this tiny chunk
is, I can't even imagine how much that whole bridge weighs.)

Oh jeez that is an attractive keepsake, really like the stainless steel end caps, such a nice touch! If it's not too personal can you give a ballpark figure for what you had to pay?

If Republicans were in charge and you asked for such a thing they'd just
tell you to fuck off.

Very very nice. I’ve got a couple of those memorial brick things, but
nothing done up like that!

One of my dad’s first jobs was working on the Golden Gate Bridge (I think
part of the endless re-painting detail). If he was still around, I’d see
about getting him one of those but alas.

The total combined weight of the Golden Gate bridge today is 887,000 tons.

Beautiful though. Your sharpie for scale was a nice touch. The amount of HAND work that goes into producing these is unbelievable. Follow link from above pic for a full page blog with details of the making.

I dunno, it does look like it could hold up my car, but I'd feel less
sure about it holding up everybody's cars AND the bridge...

They've also got a moving scaffolding mounted below the bridge deck
that's going along replacing the steel beams that support the pavement
one at a time. You just gotta hope that the engineers in charge of the
whole thing aren't graduates of the new self-esteem anti-racist 'equity'
math classes in the public schools, where 1 + 1 can equal whatever you
want depending on how oppressed your ancestors were.
