On a red-level allergy day, I watched:

GLENN BECK

AMERICAN MYSTERY
: "Close Encounters". Experts investigate the abduction of Betty and Barney
Hill, recent new evidence could explain where Travis Walton was for five days
and there may be an earthly explanation for the Mothman.

AMERICAN MYSTERY
: "Gone Missing". Intriguing new theories about Jimmy Hoffa's disappearance are
revealed. A film clip may reveal what really happened to Michael Rockefeller.
Experts investigate JFK's missing brain.

HISTORY'S GREATEST MYSTERIES:
"The Phoenix Lights Phenomenon". In 1997, thousands of people across Phoenix
witness a series of strange lights unlike anything they've ever seen. It
wasn't that big a mystery, TBH.

What did you watch?

I'm going to try to do a 2-day catch-up here, but I'm not sure I can
remember everything that I watched!... I've been doing a lot of grading
the last couple of days, so I didn't watch that much, actually.

SUN:

soaps: GH - Fri's ep. So, that's how that they got "dead body Anna" and
"hologram Anna" in the same room at the same time?! My Gawd, that is
stoopid! Anyway, Anna and Felicia convince the semi-EVOL Deputy Mayor
lady to work with them to take down Victor. Spencer is determined to
take custody of the baby, and keep it away from Esme, despite Laura's
warnings. The pregnacy test is Molly's, not Sam's (meh). Sasha "clears
the air" with Brook Lynn. Alexis discovers that Gregory (it's Gonzo!!)
has been lying to her; indeed, he seems to be sick somehow...

golf - It was a shootout at the top of the Arnold Palmer invitational
leaderboard, but the final day ended like I kind of suspected it would
- Kurt Kitayama, after a horrific triple bogey on the 9th(?) Hole,
managed to hang in there long enough to retake the lead at the end.
Harris English had a chance to force a playoff, but just *barely*
missed his birdie putt on the 18th Hole to make it happen. So Kitayama
wins his first tourney.

I saw a good chunk of "Can't Hardly Wait" on HBO Comedy (put on as
"background") - it is almost unfathomable how many people pop up in
this 1998 film! Heck even Jason Segal is in here! Even Marisol Nichols
is in this!! Wow, Amber Benson was uncredited for this?! - She even has
her picture in the end-credits! Jenna Elfman is also uncredited! (I
knew Melissa Joan Hart was uncredited...)
Afterwards, I saw part of a movie I have never seen before - 2009's
"Miss March". I didn't know who any of the principals were - though I
recognized Molly Stanton as the insane ex-girlfriend(?) of one of the
boys - it looks like Stanton effectively retired from acting soon after
this. But Eve Mauro pops up in this in a memorable part (though if she
got naked, I missed that part...).

Walker: Independence (recorded) - "How We Got Here" (ep. #12, the
penultimate episode) - I'm hoping to do a separate standalone review of
the last two episodes, maybe later today...

Settlers (Hulu) - I was up for a "sci-fi flick" on Sunday night, but
this was kind of only barely that. It's set on Mars, so at first you're
like, "How can they be breathing normally?!..." though they do
eventually adequately explain that.
But this was much more of a character study, esp. of the character
played by Brooklynn Prince as a "child" and by Nell Tiger Free (Game of
Thrones, Servant) as a... "teen"?
So I was disappointed that they left out a lot of the details. Like:
When was this taking place? (It must be hundreds of years in the
future, if not thousands!) Why did everything go to Hell? How many
people were on Mars, and how many are still left? What about Earth?!
How far along did they get in terraforming Mars (based on the ending,
it must have been pretty far along!)... Because this is a "character
study", the movie isn't really interested in answering these kind of
questions, but if you're going to do a sci-fi flick like this, you'd
better have answers fro these kinds of questions.

MON:

soaps: DOOL - Mon's ep. Brady and Eric are in jail for "kidnapping"
Stefan, and Belle comes in to represent Brady, but flat-cold refuses to
represent Eric!! "Lady Whistleblower" splashes Sloan's sex life all
over town! EJ and Nicole implement their plan to boomerang Stefan's
"poisoning" back on himself! Li continues to be creepy in trying to
wear down Gabi.

Walker: Independence (recorded) - "Let Him Hang" (ep. #13, the (almost
certain "series") finale) - I'm hoping to do a separate standalone
review of the last two episodes, maybe later today...

Otherwise, on Monday, it was mostly a mix of grading, and listening to music...

--
"Who would ever do this to him!?" - HottCiara on DOOL (04-27-2020), asking
who would stab Victor Kirakis... How about ANYONE WHO'S EVER MET HIM??!!

This is on my watch list but I never got around to watching it. Thanks
for reminding me it exists.

snip.

I watched:

The Blacklist - "The Whaler" - Something to do with a casino. It was
mostly background noise. My only question is did Red cheat or what?

The Equalizer - "Paradise Lost" - This was the final episode from last
year still on my DVR. It's always a bit jarring when I'm watching a
show and suddenly there are Christmas commercials. Anyway this week
McCall has to protect a famous singer from a mysterious threat. Didn't
I just see this exact same plot on Quantum Leap? The episode opens and
I see a recognizable actor as part of the singer's management and he
just happens to be in a position to profit off of her if she dies. I
wonder if the recognizable actor will later be revealed to have
something to do with the threats?

9-1-1 - "In a Flash" - Team 9-1-1 battle lighting strikes. It became
background noise towards the end.

History of the World, Part II (Hulu) Sequel series to the classic Mel
Brooks movie. I watched the first two episodes which told several
different stories, but the main ones were segments on Ulysses S. Grant,
Rasputin and the Russian revolution, William Shakespeare's writer's
room, the Kama Sutra as a cook book, and Judas betraying Jesus. A bit of
a mixed bag but watchable.

I will get to this at some point, but it's down the list - now that
I've finished "Walker: Independence", "The Last of Us" and "C.B.
Strike" are next on the list (along with daily soaps!). And I've still
got "The Ark".

At the rate I'm going, I may get to the premiere of "Gotham Knights"
before I get to "The Blacklist"!!

'Oblivion' (Netflix disc rental.)
A non-Mission Impossible/Top Gun Tom Cruise sci-fi movie that he somehow
roped Morgan Freeman into. A decent SF concept that could have been
really good, except it was a Tom Cruise movie. 3 stars out of 5 on
Netflix's rating scale because that's the closest to "a little above
'Meh'" that I could give.

That episode was dreadful. We got so much whining from Ressler this
week, I wanted the character to resume being a drunk. He didn't whine
when he was drunk.

Anya Banerjee is gorgeous, but they aren't doing much with the
character. Making her Malik's insta-growed daughter was unwelcome.

The idea that Siya could be taught all of the nuances of poker in a
couple of hours was STOOPID.

Red's enemy this season is worse than Marvin Gerard (Fisher Stevens)
last season. Stevens is a terrific actor but that doesn't make the plot
entertaining. Red is walking around without security but this idiot
isn't just assasinating him?

James Spader appears to be wearing a fat suit.

I really wanted to see him put a hit on the nasty little girl.

A movie I found on the Netflix called HOW IT ALL ENDS, starring Forrest
Whitaker and some guy I've seen in a lot of things but whose name I don't

Guy from Seattle is visiting his potential father-in-law (Whitaker) in Chicago
to ask for the hand of his daughter (who he's already knocked up) in marriage.
Whitaker doesn't like him one bit and pretty much sends him packing.

In his hotel room the next morning, he's Facetiming with his fiancee back in
Seattle when she suddenly screams in terror and the phone cuts off. From that
point on, its about him and Whitaker trying to get to Seattle to rescue the
daughter/fiancee and dealing with this mysterious apocalyptic event that
struck the West Coast and is never fully explained, although by the end, with
ash raining down and a massive pyroclastic cloud racing across the countryside
at the speed of sound, it seems like Mount Rainier may have blown its top.
However that doesn't explain why, for example, the power and all
communications cut out nationwide. Or why, along the way, they see military
planes crashed in flames, as if they were shot down.

Pretty good flick. Not a lot of ridiculous plot holes or characters doing
stupid things for 'drama', although it loses points for not explaining exactly
what the frak happened. I hate stories where the world-ending apocalypse is
left vague and unexplained.

Did they mention Kurt Russell?

Hey, thanks for asking!

IRON HORSE S01E02 “the dynamite driver”
Well, I asked what they would possibly do for the second episode. And I
found out. Be careful what you wish for.

The episode is entirely scored with needle drops from THE RAT PATROL.

The episode begins with Malachi Throne getting on board the wanderer which
has stopped in the middle of nowhere. This is a remake of the opening
scene of the pilot episode of the big valley. Only there it was Malachi
Throne’s train. He has Rory sign a contract to move thousands of head of
cattle with impossible penalty clauses like a dollar per steer per day for
every day he’s late. As soon as the paperwork is signed, Throne signals and
the trestle bridge in front of the train is destroyed in an explosion and
avalanche!

I’m not really sure why they didn’t just shoot Throne dead on the spot.

So now the train goes completely off the tracks. It will take two months to
replace the bridge, which is more time than they have to move the cattle.
But! Gary Collins has a sixth sense that he can build a weaker bridge. That
will be good enough to drive the cattle across. just not the train cars. so
Rory is going to start driving the cattle by a route that will bring them
back to where they started in two weeks and if the new bridge is ready,
they’ll move just the cattle across the gorge and have it meet up with
cattle cars they can order from the other side. Problems with this plan
include them completely forgetting about the engine and why bother driving
the cattle for two weeks to come right back to where you started from?

Throne has hired an evil villain to blow up stuff and to make sure that
there aren’t any cattle drivers available. so they have to make all the
people that work on the train drive cattle. To this end, they hire only
diverse people and assign them jobs that everyone knows that specific race
can’t handle.

So they spend two weeks encountering obstacles, set up by the bad guys who
both follow them in plain sight, and are constantly ahead of them doing
mischief. In one scene of totally wackiness. The tiny path through another
canyon is blocked by another dynamite avalanche. They stick, one stick of
dynamite under one of the boulders, and somehow blowing it, freeze the
entire path. But they knew the cattle would stampede the other way so they
have all the drover’s on the other side of the herd dropping dynamite there
to to make the cattle turn back the other way. They also give everybody
flares to wave under the nose is of the thousands of cows that will, keep
them going the way they want somehow.

Finally, somehow they get back to where they started. And get the cattle
moving and save the day.

The last thing I want to do is hurt you, but it is still on my list.
