While I think I may try to tackle watching movies today, yesterday I
ran errands in the morning, and the rest of the day I tried to get
grading done, so I didn't get through much TV:

soaps: DOOL - Wed's ep. I don't think much happened in this one. Nicole
and Sloan clash again, and Nicole tries to warn Eric off Sloan. EJ and
then Nicole confront Johnny and Wendy about their "theory" - and they
are getting closer to the truth... Some weird new girl wants to work
for Chanel. Sloan gets Paulina's accounts frozen!

C.B. Strike (HBO Max) - "Part 1". Good start - While visiting his
adoptive parents in Cornwall (his adoptive mother has terminal cancer),
Strike draws a very cold case: a missing persons from 1974, who may or
may not have been killed by a serial killer. Robin gets pulled into the
case too. After interviewing some witnesses (hey! it's Fionnula
Flanagan!), they eventually come across a very disturbing film from the
era that may or may not be directly relevant to their case.

Recorded for later: GH, and The Ark(!!).

What did you watch?

--
"Who would ever do this to him!?" - HottCiara on DOOL (04-27-2020), asking
who would stab Victor Kirakis... How about ANYONE WHO'S EVER MET HIM??!!

The Ark - where science is just a figment of imagination, a fevered
imagination. In this episode we find that the Ark is passing multiple
planets on the way to the nearest star system (while we see other star
systems whizzing by in the outside and inside shots of space. We also
see that solar sails don't give a slow gentle push when opened but
come on like a burst of nitro, but not right when you deploy them. No,
it's a slow build up till Wooosh!.

We also discover why some people hate William Trust (sp?). Apparently
his efforts to make the Ark ships also helped contribute to the
conditions on Earth that are killing off millions of people. We also
discover that Bryce has a fatal fainting spell disease that could kill
today or tens of years from now, but he doesn't want anyone to know
even though he has served a critical role in the crew. Nothing like
having people depend on you to save their lives when you might pass
out at any moment and no one knows about it or is in any position to
help if it happens. What a wonderful crew they choose for this first
Ark.

Speaking of Arks they found another one, Ark 5. Which presumably has a
faster than light engine, which was being developed for the later
version of Arks after Ark 1. Though since Ark 5 is apparently the
source of U-238 they were looking and the unknown element , I'm
guessing the FTL drive uses the unknown element. It may also have
leaked some of the unknown element as Ark 5 passed Ark 1 and hence
been the source of their attack. There's also a question of is anyone
going to be alive on Ark 5, but that will wait till next week.

I am gearing up for a full Snark if I can recover from a flash double
feature, which included the worst episode they’ve ever made.

That's Jada's sister.

This season was pretty good.

'The Darkest Hour' (Netflix disc rental)

Olivia Thirlby and Rachael Taylor run around Moscow during an invasion
by invisible electrical aliens. If I wasn't making screencaps it would
be a background noise time filler.

Actually, I rather like this one - like "The Host", I think it's underrated...

This adaptation has a satisfying ending and the revelation does not feel
like a cheat. Robin has to deal with one annoying character that was
pointless nonsense, but they finally resolve the crap with her husband
of two minutes, crap that's plagued several novels.

The main mystery was entertaining.

This will be a two day catch-up. I watched:

Fantasy Island - "Walk a Country Mile" - The Island causes a country
star and her assistant to swap places. Meanwhile they appear to have
written off the daughter character. I'm not sure why she was ever added
to the show in the first place. The preview for next week looks like
they are going to monkey paw some poor guest again!

Quantum Leap - "S.O.S." - Ben leaps into the 3rd in command of a U.S.
war ship during the middle of war games that the captain is taking a
little too seriously. The 2nd in command turns out to be Superman, I
mean the Atom, and his probably future father in law. There was
discussion about how changing the life of someone on their team wouldn't
have significant consequences and not only do I not buy that for a
second, how in the world could they possibly know one way or the other?
Especially when earlier episodes have already established that they
aren't even aware of changes to the timeline. Unless the script
requires them to be aware then they are. Now that I think about it, I
have no idea how changes to the timeline works in the Quantum Leap universe!

The Flash - "The Mask of the Red Death, Part 2" - Team Flash, wait a
minute, now that I think about it, what happened to team Flash? Why did
they need to bring in criminals to help? Anyway Team Flash takes on the
Red Death. I really liked seeing Batwoman but when they name dropped
Supergirl that immediately reminded me if Supergirl is still around and
they are going outside the group for help, then why didn't they ask her
to help?

The Ark - "Two by Two" - Just above background noise.

The Darkest Hour is a pretty good movie. "The Host" (2013 sci-fi movie)
on the other hand... To be fair, I think I only saw it the one time in
the theater. Maybe I'll revisit it one day.

I saw The Host about two weeks ago. (Another 'Flix disc screencapping.)
It wasn't bad for what it is. I just may not have been in the proper
mood for it at the time.

The Darkest Hour wasn't horrible, I'd seen it before. It is just a low
budget Russian production despite having Hollywood leads. (When you get
a brief look at what the aliens actually look like I thought even the
aliens look Russian!)

If you don't like "teen(/YA) grrrl!" romances, you won't like "The
Host". But, for my money, it's the best film in this subgenre, leagues
better than something like "Twilight" or "Beautiful Creatures", etc.

I really don’t think so. A full hour of characters standing around,
explaining what was happening to each other, and I still couldn’t follow
it.

This reminds me. The greatest original fantasy Island episode of them all,
the one with Maren Jensen as a ventriloquist dummy come to life and having
sex with people while the ventriloquist Annette Funicello feels everything
she’s doing, got re-run last week. But I didn’t notice until it was too
late to warn yutes. I’ve set it up to let me know next time around.

Team Flash barely has anybody with powers anymore. Kid Flash is gone
although obviously, he could be there in about a3 of a second. The tornado
twins went back to the future. Cisco went off to categorize what the hell
their world looks now post crisis. The new Frost apparently only has the
power to tell if somebody’s pregnant. Elongated Man went away because he
told an insensitive joke in his stand up comedy routine 20 years ago. Cute
skinny girl apparently has some sort of teleportation power or device which
once they established that they didn’t use it. Joe’s wife has the power to
be happy she only gets to see her kid on the weekends. And they just forgot
about all the auxiliary members.

A better question would be, what the hell happened to the justice league?
They set up that headquarters and one of Barry‘s other star labs. And then
apparently just forgot about it.

The loophole for that might be that in the second or third to last
stupidgirl episode, their world changed one last time to explain why the
writers got one of the avatars wrong. And they never told us what was
different than that. So maybe all the justice league, including superman,
blinked out of existence, and the mind of man.

I have no idea what became of the legends of tomorrow.

Anyway Team Flash takes on the

They not only name dropped Supergirl, they name dropped Dreamer, and
somebody else. And they’re all around because they’re planning on going to
happy hour after they get rid of the villains or something. Yes, why would
you have batteredwoman come and save you when there’s a Supergirl out
there?

Ubi asked what became of Superman?? And that’s a hell of a question
because while Superman and lame ass is in a universe without Supergirl, it
makes no sense that Supergirl is in a universe without Superman.

And how did Batteredwoman even credibly save them? She took on the evil Red
Death, who has the same speed powers as Flash, and defeated her with... kicks
and punches?

Why didn't Red Death just super-speed punch Batteredwoman like several million
times in a second and turn her into a pink mist? Instead she just stands there
and lets Batteredwoman kick her, which even then shouldn't have done much
considering the huge honkin' suit of armor Red Death was wearing.

There are so many things this show could fix with just minor changes in
dialogue, or minor tweeks to the premise! It's so frustrating!!

But I think shawn's "Writer #2" wrote this one, as this writer seemed
to know rudimentary physics...

They paid some lip service to the fact that Ryan Wilder could beat Ryan
Wilder, because Ryan Wilder knew every move that Ryan Wilder might make,
while Ryan Wilder didn’t know every move that Ryan Wilder might make.
