A man was trying to help his mother sell the house she no longer lived
in. Unfortunately, squatters had taken over and real estate agents were
unable to show the house for several months.

He figured out a legal way to get them out. He leased the house from his
mother making him the legal tenant, then while the squatters were out, he
entered the house and began setting up video cameras. The squatters
returned and he explained that he was going to remove all their
belongings that day, then secure the house so they could not return and
he warned them if they did there would be video evidence.

Given that there's no practical way to use the legal system to deal with
squatters who were never tenants to begin with, I guess he found a way
to do it.

He said he essentially did it the same way they took possession in the
first place... by squatting.

The UK has high court enforcers who collect debts and evict squatters
after court judgments.

This is apparently a fairly common thing in the city of Detroit, where the
city Property Tax Dept. is so incompetent and lazy that YEARS can go by
before they bother inspecting a house to see if someone is living there.

So scammers just walk in, paint the interior and throw some cheep carpet
down and using fake ID, get the electricity, gas and water turned back on
and rent to the place to whoever, until one day the tenants discover their
"landlord" doesn't own the place and they get unceremoniously kicked to
the curb by the city.

Isn't is great how the government can kick you out almost instantly but
if you're a legitimate property owner and you have a nightmare tenant,
you can't get them out in anything under six months?

It's what I probably would have done if kicking them out at gunpoint
wasn't a viable option.

After reviewing the video by Handyman, there are at least two things I found 'off', and it wasn't with the squatters:

1) The locks had never been changed, handyman had a key for the squatters lockset. How did squatter get the key?

2) The utilities were ON in the house. Who turned on the utilities and paid the (gas, electric, water) deposit?

From experience, I once had a tenant legally evicted but wouldn't move until the end of the 30 day notice period. While STILL in the home, tenant was running AC full blast, with OPEN windows, with no intention of paying utility bill, during the dog-days of summer, high heat, high humidity, HIGH electric bill.

So in the evening, I went over unannounced and quietly pulled the AC disconnect, rendering the AC ineffective.

The next day in the scorching 100 degree heat, I returned to inspect property at dusk, and the people were gone.

First thing I did was change the locks on the front door, back door, and the overhead garage door.

I didn't put the AC disconnect back in until I was ready to rehab (paint, clean, etc) the unit .

If pulling the AC plug had not done the trick, the next step planned was to turn off the water at the curb box with a 6' water meter key. Fortunately, I didn't have to play that rough, or clean out toilets full of dank doo-doo, when they left.

Was this perfectly legal? Probably not, but hey, fuk-em.
