I've noticed a weird trend lately where any incident, car wreck,
criminal chase, reckless driver, whatever, the local news makes a point
of noting that the vehicle involved is a Tesla. But they don't do that
with any other kind of car. They may describe it as a sedan vs a pickup
truck, but they rarely ever mention the brand name of the vehicle. Only
Teslas seem to rate this special mention.

I wonder why that is?

But they don't. The news might say sports car, or even high-end sports car,
but I've never heard them specifically point out the brand before. Only
Tesla.

It's puzzling...

Yes, they get mentioned but not like Tesla because only Tesla keeps
pushing their full self driving while the others only offer assisted
driving. Tesla may not intend people to treat it like a completely
autonomous vehicle but with that name and how it works some people
will treat it like one and will get in accidents. Which the reporters
are bound to bring up in their reports.

If Tesla is effectively the only "fully self-driving" brand, then yeah,
I suppose I'd expect the whole description whenever that's involved.
