Her black ancestors are Caribbean, not African.

On the other hand, American progs tend to idiotically refer to anyone who's
black anywhere in the world as 'African-American'.

I once saw Idris Elba referred to on TV as an 'African-American actor',
despite the fact that he's neither African nor American.

A comment I once saw at PJM mentioned a friend of the author of the
comment who was a white from South Africa who had emigrated to the US.
Whenever asked about his ethnic heritage on an HR form, he selected
African-American. That drove the HR people nuts but there was nothing
they could do about it. Hmm. I wonder if Charlize Theron "identifies" as
African-American when she fills out forms? If not, I wonder what she
does put on forms?

He's from Balmer!

His parents were born in two different countries in Africa, looking it
up. He was born in London.

Well, everyone is descended from Africans at some point, which is why
making these distinctions is silly.

Back when I was in college, we had a student cause all sorts of
liberal-proggie angst when she applied for one of the university's
African-American scholarships.

Problem was, she was as blonde, blue-eyed, and white as Kristen Bell.

But you see, she was born of American diplomats living in South Africa,
so she had dual citizenship. She literally was African-American.

Of course the school denied her, saying, "But... but.. but... that's not
what we meant! We meant "black", but since we can't say "black", we had
to use the PC-approved term."

She ended up suing the school and the court ruled in her favor, telling
the university that if they meant "black", they should have said "black"
and as there was no actual requirement anywhere in the scholarship
eligibility requirements other than the student be "African-American",
the girl met the qualifications.

So many progs' heads exploded on campus that day, it sounded like the
4th of July. I remember it fondly..

Some likely are, certainly, but there’s no evidence that she is. And there
are certainly blacks in the Caribbean that didn’t come directly from
Africa, and never had slaves in their ancestry.

My understanding is she puts African-American, because it got her ahead
financially and in quota systems. But make no mistake, she was lying.

Did she grow up there for a number of years? But being born there would
make her African, I agree.

I don't understand how she has citizenship, though, given that official
foreign government representatives and their families aren't considered
to have immigrated. A child of a staff member of an embassy born in the
United States isn't a natural-born citizen of the United States under
international law despite the clause in the constitution.

Saharan Africans might disagree, not to mention Chinese and Indian
ethnics whose ancestors came to various African countries in colonial
days.

I wasn't clear. Mom was an actual South African. Dad was the American.

Got it. Now the dual citizenship makes sense.

They're all Blacks of African decent, which is their ancestral homeland.

Uh, Ed? We're all from Africa. I'm sure all of our ancestors were a
lot darker-skinned than us.

Nope, if you didn't come from Africa in recent time (no idea just
where the cutoff is) then you can't be African. Maybe the cutoff is
where your ancestors most recently lived. So one of my old college
room mates would count as being an African American since he was born
in Zimbabwe. Though he was as white as me but with a funny accent, but
I can't count as African American since my ancestors most recently
came over from the UK/Europe.

Though I dare say many of the people who care deeply about this would
not want to consider that college room mate an African American even
though he was born and raised in Africa and his parents lived and live
there (at least at the time.) Yet because of his skin color he can't
call himself African in their eyes.

Easy. We go back in time just far enough to include the preferred target
minority group, but then we arbitrarily stop so we don't end up
including everyone. In other words, the people who care so much about
this nonsense have arbitrarily decreed that the term African-American
requires us to go back only so far that we can exclude everyone but
blacks from on both ends of the timeline. It has to be long enough ago
that Afrikaaners and other non-black ethnicities are excluded but not so
far back that those same people can claim their ancestors can be counted
as African also.

Even though the term describes people like Charlize Theron-- a white
person who is both a citizen of South Africa and the United States--
much more accurately than some surly yout from South Central L.A. who
has never even been out of Compton and couldn't point out Rwanda or the
Congo on a map.

It's a particularly egregious bit of self-serving PC nonsense.

I'm shocked.

Mom was an actual South African. Dad was the American.

Who gives a fuck. Don't you have a support network to tell you how
utterly pointless this line of bullshit is? I guess the Oath Keepers

Who is "they?" If you mean "humans" then you misspelled "we" because
you're so fucking stupid. Hope this helps.

Sure, but that's how society works. Write a book, go on a speaking
tour. Or be an anonyshit on a dying form of social media, that sounds
the most effective! I'll bet even your fellow Oath Keepers get sick of
your horseshit.

Homo sapiens sapiens (humans) may have initially evolved in Africa but they
were not like us when they wandered out into the rest of the world, nor were
they like modern sub-Saharan Black Africans.

Modern humans are the result of bazillions of years of interbreeding with
several other hominids such as Neanderthals and Denisovans and quite likely
some others that haven't been discovered yet.

Native Black Africans for example carry DNA from a "phantom" hominid that
hasn't been identified yet and this DNA is not present in other humans.

> I'm sure all of our ancestors were a lot darker-skinned than us.

The skin color of the earliest humans is unknown at this point. If they were
(mostly) hairless like modern humans, then odds are they were dark skinned
but if they were hairy, then they were probably light skinned. For example
if you shave a chimpanzee, their skin color is a kinda grayish pink.

But it seemd like anim8rfsk was suggesting Black people are native to the
Americas and that's just not the case, they're descended from sub-Saharan
Black Africans brought over as slaves by Europeans, later interbreeding with
American Indians and Europeans and even some Asians mixed in.

Yes, and even after 400 years, we still consider them African-American.
Same with those Africans that were brought to the Caribbean (an area in
the Americas), who also mixed with the local indigenous peoples and
European.

Yeah, I know. They were even more woke.

Fair enough. I hadn't read that.

No melanin at all.

If there were pre-Columbian black people in the Caribbean (and wouldn't
they have been eaten by the native Caribs?), I'd not heard of them.
