This is part of an infrequent series on wrestling history.

On March 23, 2001, Vince McMahon bought his one-time adversary, World Championship Wrestling, for a price of around $3 million. WCW Monday Nitro had scheduled what had been billed as a season finale, the Spring Breakout, live from Panama City Beach, Florida, three days later. The then-WWF - looking forward to WrestleMania X-Seven in Houston - allowed Spring Breakout to go ahead.
So on March 26, 2001, millions of people turned on TVs at 8 pm to watch the final episode of Nitro on TNT. Vince opened the show by saying that he had bought WCW, and he would make an address later on. Ric Flair cut a promo where he put over the promotion's big stars. He said he was told not to cry when he was on the stick. Then the first match: Booker T defeated Scott Steiner to win the WCW World title. He gave Scott a Bookend for the pin. Rey Mysterio and Billy Kidman defeated Shannon Moore and Ever Karigias and Kaz Hayashi and Yang in a 3-Way to get a title shot at the WCW Cruiserweight tag team titles. Shane Helms defeated Chavo Guerrero Jr. to retain the WCW Cruiserwight title after a vertebreaker. Booker cut a promo where he issued an open challenge. In match number four, Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo retained the WCW World championships by defeating Team Canada with the Sean-Ton Bomb. In a tattoo match, Shawn Stasiak defeated Bam Bam Bigelow with a neckbreaker and help from Stacy Kiebler. In Cleveland, where Raw was taking place, Michael Cole interrupted a Vince promo and William Regal called WCW a "bloody awful place." Rey and Kidman defeated Kid Romeo and Elix Skipper to win the cruiserweight tag team titles. In the final match in WCW history, Ric Flair and Sting the Crow - who faced one another on the first Nitro in 1995 - faced one another. Stinger made Flair submit to the Scorpion Death Drop. Then Vince appeared from Cleveland, and then Nitro and Raw were simulcast on TNT and TNN. Vince said that what he was going to do with WCW. Then Shane McMahon showed up in Panama City Beach, and then startled everyone by saying the contract to buy WCW was signed by a McMahon - Shane McMahon.

In the ratings, the Nitro finale drew a 3.0 rating, up almost 50 percent from the March 19, 2001 episode.
WCW was the only promotion that came close to toppling Vince with the New World Order, but the screwups that happened during the Monday Night War era (Fingerpoke of Doom! Letting younger stars leave! David Arquette!) led the promotion to its demise.
