The Ark (recorded) - "The Painful Way" (ep. #9). I wasn's expecting to
like this one, however I ended up liking it quite a bit - but I'm a
"conflict junkie" when it comes to TV drama, and this one had a lot of
conflict!!

Alicia figures out that Ark 15 is ahead of Ark 1 in heading to
Proxima b. William Trust wants to design a "shield" against Ark 15's
weapons, but it is untested. Garnet doesn't want to risk the crew on
something untested, and unilaterally orders them to change course to
Ross 128. (Brice backs Garent up, mostly because he hates Trust).
Most of the rest of the crew does not want to add years to their
trip. So, variously the Trusts, Lane and Cat try to foment dissent and
insurection among the crew - the Trusts work on Jelena. At one point,
Garnet and Brice are attacked by random Trust-supporting crew thugs!
Eventually, William Trust even gets to Eva, who doesn't think the
ship will last to Ross 128 and more importantly still wants to "save"
Brice from certain doom from his disease!
So Jelena drugs Felix, Eva drugs Brice, and Cat drugs Garnet, and
the Trusts take over, reinstalling Lane as "acting captain".
By this point, it's clear that Helena Trust is basically an insane
despot-type, and she's pulling her husband's strings!
Meanwhie, in the "I told you so!!" department, now clearly EVOL!!1!
Kelly wants to get her wrist comminicator fixed, and when she finally
does it is revealed that her communicator is an *Ark 15* comm, not an
Ark 3 one!! (I called it!) and Kelly has to murder the dude who fixed
her comm and realized this. EVOL!!1! Kelly intends to contact Ark 15,
as her comm has "subspace" communication. (Going back to original "Star
Trek", it has never been explained what "subspace" communication is, or
how it works!!)
With Garnet, Brice and Felix in confinment, the Trusts stop the
journey to Ross 128, intending to go back towards Proxima B. But Trust
is locked out of the system! Helena stars pulling the air out of the
room that Garnet, et al are confined in! Jelena can't get in to save
them!!
Alicia confesses to locking Trust out of the system in order to save
them. Helena immediately wants to space Alicia, and Eva and Lane have
had enough and revolt. However, about half of the remaining bridge crew
is EVOL!!1! and attacks them. (Why aren't these people spaced?!!)
Jelena also switches sides and releases Garnet, Brice and Felix who
beeline to the bridge and reassume control. Despite Lane trying to help
Alicia, Garnet coldly coldcocks Lane!
Lane, Cat, and the Trusts are now the ones confined in a brig!!
Eva and Jelena get a stern talking to, and their fates are still up
in the air!
In the episode's dumbest bit, Ark 15 immediately drops out of warp
at this point. (How the eff did it get to them so fast?! Does Ark 15
have "Warp 9"?!!) Garnet has Alicia try Trust's "shield" and it
predictably fails. It's a standoff!
But EVOL!!1! Kelly kills(?) the brig guard, and busts into the brig
to take Trust for Ark 15!
Next episode: An Ark 15 boarding party tries to come aboard Ark 1!
They've come for William Trust!

I think they use a Heisenberg compensator to make it work. ;-)

How much figuring does it take to figure that the FTL ship is probably
ahead of the STL ship?

William Trust wants to design a "shield" against Ark 15's
> weapons, but it is untested. Garnet doesn't want to risk the crew on
> something untested, and unilaterally orders them to change course to
> Ross 128.

This completely confused me. They seem to be saying that the shield would
only work at one destination. Why?

(Brice backs Garent up, mostly because he hates Trust).
> Most of the rest of the crew does not want to add years to their
> trip.

Which begs the question of how fast the arcs are. Ark one was a year away
from Proxima B at STL speeds. But at FTL speeds it’s only going to add a
couple years to get to Ross 128 which is 2.5 times farther away from earth.
At least it actually is in the same basic direction:

https://in-the-sky.org/data/charts/constellations_map_equ1110112.png

Proxima B is in Virgo and Ross 128 is in Centaurus.

So, variously the Trusts, Lane and Cat try to foment dissent and

They’ve already explained that they can’t afford to space them. They could,
however recycle them.

If only there were another fully functional Ark available to any of these
people, it would change everything!

I don’t see why you don’t just head to Proxima B first and if you detect
number 15 just veer slightly and continue on to Ross 128. They act like
these things are in opposite directions.

Given the various head injuries and methods of unconsciousness, it’s
beginning to look like nobody is a robot. :-(

I may have to just settle for reading through your description of this
episode as I've been trying to watch it for hours and I keep having to
stop and go watch something else to clear the memory of what I'm
seeing out of my mind. The writing is just so poor that I'm not even
sure I could come up with something as awful as this and believe me
when I say that my few attempts at fiction were truly awful and yet
someone got paid for this tripe.

That much is reasonable but all that needs to be said is that the idea
that Trust has is entirely untested and that their best people think
the risk of failure is entirely too high to risk their lives on it.

>So, variously the Trusts, Lane and Cat try to foment dissent and
>insurection among the crew - the Trusts work on Jelena. At one point,
>Garnet and Brice are attacked by random Trust-supporting crew thugs!

At this point I'm thinking spacing much of the remaining members of
the human race might be a reasonable decision or at least the writer
of this tripe.

> Eventually, William Trust even gets to Eva, who doesn't think the
>ship will last to Ross 128 and more importantly still wants to "save"

If she truly believes the ship won't last till they get to Ross 128
then why doesn't she go talk to Garnet about it. Because the writer
doesn't want her to do the obvious thing and then have to come up with
a reason Garnet won't listen.

> So Jelena drugs Felix, Eva drugs Brice, and Cat drugs Garnet, and
>the Trusts take over, reinstalling Lane as "acting captain".

So the crew is going to trust people that are willing to do whatever
it takes to take control of the ship? Oh and Lane is going to trust
these people too? If I were him I would be imprisoning Jelena, Eva,
Cat and the Trusts until such time as he felt he could trust them.

It relies on the same technology that makes FTL work but better
because their FTL drives apparently only go at light speed based on
what I heard while the subspace communication is actually faster than
light.

Ark 15 got the advanced FTL drive along with the weapons system.
Apparently tech development goes VERY fast when the future of humanity
is on the line.

Why? Given that with the attacks Ark 15 did they could easily have
killed Trust. They may not have known which ship he was on but they
were clearly trying to kill them all.

Whee! Do they teleport aboard? Getting aboard a moving ship if you
need to dock with it isn't exactly an easy task, in the real world. Of
course in this world it will be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

I think they were saying it would only be needed if they encountered
Ark 15 again. Which they were sure was waiting at Proxima B so by
heading to Ross 128 they avoided the need for the untested shield
technology.

I think the Arks are as fast (or slow) as the current writer needs
them to be. Writer #a (I'm not sure if this a writer #1/2/3 issue)
wants Ark 1 to move at a steady but slow pace so it will take years to
get to Ross 128. Writer #b wants the Ark 15 story to come into play
so when called over sub space Ark 15 is able to get to Ark 1 instantly
even though Ark 1 was now on an entirely unknown point on their
journey (from Ark 15's perspective) because they stopped midway
between Earth and Proxima B and now are traveling to Ross 128 and yet
Ark 15 can instantly find them. Guess sub space comes with a GPS
function.

Yeah, this may have been idiot plotting, as there are several other
ways Garnet could have handled this, but she arbitrarily chose the
*worst* way (similar to her "firing" Lane...).

That's also where "The 'Hundred[sic]" pretty much ended up - they all
deserved to die... badly!

Yep.

That would have been an even better episode storyline! - The Trusts
install Lane, who immediately "coups their coup!" and imprisons them
and their loyalists so he can run the ship all by himself!!

That was implied, yes. But because they don't explain the tech, they
can make it do whatever they want!!

As Anim pointed out, how did Ark 15 even know exactly where Ark 1 was,
let alone getting there so fast!

Yeah, I'm guessing originally they wanted to kill Trust, but now they
"need" him for some reason.

At least I hope it's that, and not something dumb like they just want
to take possession of Trust so they can execute him!!

Yeah, because right now they're "not moving", right?!! They dropped out
of FTL and "stopped dead in space"! ;)

Okay, I just started watching this show last night and have only watched the
first three episodes, so I have nothing to say about episode nine, but has
anyone mentioned on previous snarks that they shouldn't have gravity on the
bridge (or anywhere else on the ship that's not in the parts that are
rotating)?

We see the camera zoom in from outside through the windows into the bridge, so
we know for a fact the bridge is not in the rotating part of the ship, so
there should be no gravity there. Hell, we never see them *anywhere* on the
ship in zero-G. Every scene in every part of the ship, the crew is walking
around like normal. It seems like the only part of the ship they put in the
rotating modules were the sleep capsules-- which is the one time the crew
wouldn't need gravity.

Also, episode three is the one with the comet. They're on a collision course
for the comet and have no engines to maneuver with. I literally instantly said
to myself, "Self, this is a colony ship so they must have some way to get
everyone and everything down to the planet when they eventually get there,
which means they have some kind of shuttle on board that could easily use its
engines to nudge them out of the comet's way." And of course that was exactly
the case but this solution occurred to not one of all these super-geniuses on
the command staff. It was the nerdy plant boy who made an off-hand, "Too bad
we can't just get out and push" that suddenly lit the light bulbs over
everyone's head. With a command staff this stupid, they all deserve to die.

Then they notice it's not really an asteroid like they thought, but a comet.
And why? Because it has a tail!

But wait... comets only have tails when they're passing close to a star. It's
the solar wind that blows the boiling gases off the surface of the comet and
creates the long tail behind it. And earlier in the show, they said they
couldn't deploy the solar sails to generate energy to get out of its way
because the sails only work in a solar system where there's solar wind. Since
they were in deep space, the sails were a no-go.

So why did the comet have a tail?

there should be no gravity there. Hell, we never see them *anywhere* on the

around like normal. It seems like the only part of the ship they put in the
rotating modules were the sleep capsules-- which is the one time the crew
wouldn't need gravity.

everyone and everything down to the planet when they eventually get there,

its

exactly
the case but this solution occurred to not one of all these super-geniuses
on
the command staff. It was the nerdy plant boy who made an off-hand, "Too
bad
we can't just get out and push" that suddenly lit the light bulbs over
everyone's head. With a command staff this stupid, they all deserve to die.

They were using two shuttles simultaneously to move the FTL drive. They
probably only have one dock, but I’d of still scavenged the other shuttle
and tied it to something.
