Same guy probably supports defunding the police and not prosecuting
shoplifters and looters. Maybe looting for "social justice" has consequences.

Also, calling Walmart a "corporate ravager of our community" while demanding
they remain open for their convenience is a bold stance to take.

Also, he claims this is "food desert"? A little Google-mapping shows there are
three grocery stores within a mile of where he's standing. Closest, an Aldi
off of 85th street 0.2 miles away. Furthest is a Jewel 0.8 miles away. Maybe
everyone in the community is obese because they *choose* to eat at KFC and
McDonalds rather than shop for the healthy food that's available to them.

Where did you find that? I'm not sure who that is.

Those stores opened after the looting in 2020, I think. Walmart made a
committment to social justice when they sited these stores, after George
Floyd. They invoked George Floyd for marketing reasons; it didn't work.

It's hard to run a department store in a neighborhood with declining
population. They closed a store in an affluent neighborhood 'cuz, duh,
they don't shop at Walmart.

I think that Jewel closed. There are complaints about Aldi for reasons I
don't understand.

As always, it's worse than you think. A number of years ago, Whole Foods
opened in Englewood, a neighborhood long in decline. They got a city
subsidy. Two years ago, the store closed due to lack of shoppers.

A black-owned small chain store grocery store rented the same space and
tried to open a few weeks ago. Protestors thwarted their opening because
the chain doesn't have the prestige of Whole Foods.

So it's better to have no store open in that space just because they
aren't seen as being as good as Whole Paycheck?

I only buy apples and frozen pancakes at WF. I don't even bother to check Bezos meat prices.

That reminds me. We went through at least six months of the various food
delivery places trying to get you to order from black owned restaurants. I
never did because they were all barbecue or mac & cheese places and it’s
pretty much nothing I can eat I haven’t seen any of that in a couple of
months now. I guess they gave up, but I wonder why.

CNN had a story this past week about the pervasiveness of Dollar General
Stores and how one that opened affected a longtime smaller independent
grocery. I know there are around 15 Dollar Generals in my county which
borders on the ridiculous, some are less than two miles apart from each
other.

They also interviewed Dollar General's flack who said their new stores
actually promoted economic development an area.

Retail grocery is a tough business, but if the consumer decides to not
shop at the grocer for items only the grocer has, like produce, meat,
and dairy, and choose instead to buy only pre-packaged food, then the
market has spoken about the demand for grocery items.

"Food desert" isn't a problem for the government to solve, is it. If
there were a market, someone would serve it.

Is Dollar General a franchise?

I think part of the issue is filling up retail spaces with tenants that
might otherwise be small grocery stores, avoiding competition with chain
grocers.

Like gambling, liquor stores, churches, and the military-industrial
complex

The economic development is promoted around where the CEO lives.

This is an exaggeration of the reality but not by much as they often
follow the Starbucks mantra of they need to have a DG within sight of
another DG.

Why do they consider that relevant? Either they serve their customers
or they don't. Meaning they either thrive or they don't.

Seems to me it would be a bit tougher opening in a location formerly
occupied by a big name chain in the same business. But if they want to
take on the location more power to them. As for the protesters, if
they have a beef at all it's with Whole Foods not the new guys.

This article has a history of Walmart in Chicago. It left plenty of
information out but it's good enough to provide context for this
discussion.

I take back something I said: One of the Walmarts was rebuilt after
looting, so clearly, Walmart intended to stay in Chicago. The decision
to close was made despite having rebuilt the store.

Walmart fought hard to open the stores now exiting Chicago's South and
West sides
By Sunday, four Walmart locations are set to close, a shock to those who
remember the retailer clawing its way to do business in the city.

DG (in some select stores) has recently started carrying a limited
selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. The DG flack stressed though
they "weren't a grocery store, they're a convenience store."

No I'm pretty sure they're all owned and operated by the mother ship in
Goodlettsville, TN (bedroom community north of Nashville).

We got one a few miles S of town, and I went in one day to explore it.
They're a convenience store but also like the old variety/five and dime
stores.

There's a Dollar tree No. of town, but they don't even have a frozen
food section. The town over on the ID/WA state line has both. There's 2
full size supermarkets there too.
