That gospel choir was in full voice
and arms waved as if a giant ocean congregated
under wooden beams of the Bethel church
and outside, snow began to drift out of winter clouds
and the whitening brightening blanket
couldn’t erase those blue harmonies of believers,
for that is all that was left to cling to
after bullets quieted another voice
outside those doors of tranquility.

I drove by, cautious in the winter’s attack
but never fearful, it was only snow after all
and the color of my flesh blended well assuring
no .45 issue would be aimed at my face
for braving such a cold day.
