Underground Garage

So, sturdy those rat labyrinths,
cement and steel
tucked under Manhattan
where the Mazda mingles with Ford,
a Chevy parked in haste pin
the Mustang into a dark corner
as urine displays a steady downhill stream
and calcified drips from stained ceilings
become icicles in the heat and never ending blue
of ignition.

All day or hourly, the subterranean motel
provides a home for wheels and wires
while above, night tenants seek doorways
and discarded Marlboros, maybe a sip, if lucky,
from bottled octane wishing they could curl up below
in the back seat of a high finned cruiser,
but not tonight, a show on Broadway has brought out
the ‘no occupancy’ and lights dim to applause
of those lucky enough to park for the night.
