I read something, can't recall where, that the group
was fascinated by Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds". And
I've seen some similar references, that other Brit bands
were also so influenced, at that time.

I don't hear it, whether Beatles or anybody else. The
album was a typical Beach Boys product, primarily vocal
harmonies, including a few hits.

Anyone care to elaborate on this?

Standard stuff in The Beatles lexicon. Pet Sounds did not do well in the US but it was big in England. McCartney repeats the narrative of the influence in the first episode of McCartney 3,2,1.

I have never understood the appeal of Pet Sounds. I like some of the songs, but otherwise just don’t get it. Today the LP is considered one of the best albums ever recorded, but that is in retrospect, and I suspect it is because of the influence it had on the Beatles.

It is a good example of the difference in musical taste of the British public vs the US public. Another example is Pink Floyd’s “Piper’s at the Gates of Dawn”. That album was popular in Britain but went nowhere in the US. But, of course, once Floyd achieved renown with their later stuff there was a reevaluation of the earlier stuff and Piper’s has a following and is held in greater esteem.

McCartney has been expressing his admiration of Pet Sounds for years. His stories have evolved, and some versions of his "Pet Sounds inspired Sgt. Pepper" tale strike me as far-fetched. I don't detect any Beach Boys influence on Pepper.

Pete Townshend wrote a song called "Goin' Fishin'" around the same time which he claimed had some Beach Boys influence. It's a great little song (with fine drumming by Pete) but I'm not sure about the supposed BB influence.

BTW, while McCartney has cited the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" as his favorite song of all time, Brian Wilson claimed that song was inspired by the Beatles' Revolver. The problem is, "God Only Knows" doesn't sound like anything on Revolver, and Wilson made this statement just a couple of years ago, in 2017.

It looks as if there's some mutual back-patting and revisionist history going on between McCartney & Wilson.

I think McCartney was influenced by “God Only Knows” in his writing and singing of “Here, There and Everywhere”.

And I think " Wonderful" on the "Smile" album was Brian's attempt to match "She's Leaving Home"

He fell short.

Well there are some pet sounds in the intro of "Good Morning, Good
Morning."

Or maybe it's about the use of orchestral instruments not normally heard
in pop songs like the harp in the intro of "She's Leaving Home." Wilson
conducted a full orchestra for Pet Sounds as I remember (with some
bizarre anecdotes).

He sure did. "Wonderful" sounds like a parody of the Beach Boys.

Van Dyke Parks was by far Brian's worst lyricist.

He looks okay there.

I remember that when Wilson re-emerged in the late 80s to promote his first (sllegedly co-produced by Eugene Landy) solo album, half of his face seemed paralyzed, as if he'd had a stroke. I thought, "That's why only half of his face is shown on the album cover."

This condition was eventually recognized as an effect of the excessive prescription drug regimen Landy had him on.

First, to me, the album sounds like their others, nothing special.

Duke Ellington, who famously denigrated rock, was asked about
the Beatles. He replied, "At least they sing in key." Which was sort of a
lukewarm compliment.

It's true, they were more attuned to voice than the other rock screamers.
So it's possible McC is talking about the Beach Boys vocalizations, as
something worth studying, rather than the melodies.

When I lived in Malibu (California) one day I saw Paul driving a convertible
and when I caught up with him and was stopped waiting for another car to
cross,
I could hear a Beach Boys song coming from his sound equipment, later I heard
in an
interview that they did on a LA radio to Paul himself commenting that he liked
driving
down Mullholland Drive listening to Beach Boys at full volume.

At that moment it occurred to me that The Beatles did not have the perception
of The Beatles
as it shook us, and surely they were looking for their own idols all the time.
