Ever since businesses and individuals have taken advantage of cloud
computing to move records off paper and into electronic format, the
federal government has treated it as they've voluntarily given up rights
under the Fourth Amendment.

Under federal law, secret search orders are served upon third parties to
produce the customer's records. These are not the same as search
warrants and cannot be challenged by the target.

I had no idea: These secrecy orders are indefinite.

Scott Fitzgerald (R-Wisconsin) has introduced legislation to limit the
period of secrecy for 90 days unless the government asks for an
extension of secrecy.

It appears that members of both parties in both Houses are in favor and
it's non-controversial.
